high resistance means no shorts, low resistance means a short

I read something about that but something confused me. I don't remember exactly what is was but I should be testing the resistance? If so what readings should I get?

Ok, so your issue is a typical one. I'd stop right there and pull both the Y-main and X-main to check the heat sink components for shorts. If you continue to test without pulling boards, you may do more damage.

As far as some other things go, there is a slight screen glow I don't notice any pixels when I hit the menu button, one normal click on and the LED on the control board is on for maybe 5 seconds and off for about 2.

Both stay steady over 200 (200 is max on my multimeter). With the Y main plugged in the voltage drops.

If you'd said the opposite was happening, you could probably point to the Y-buffer as being the issue. Otherwise, the Y-main being disconnected pretty much means the Y-buffer is disconnected, too. How does your VS voltage look?

OK I think Tom66 would be best at helping with this...

Take pics of each board and then one of the entire back of the chassis so we can see everything.

I have a similar problem with my RCA 42PA30RQ. I've read various posts but none of them cover my exact problem. I am also unable to create a new post as I just became a member today..

    X Main shows a short.
Thanks for everyone's help. I think next time, I will save myself money and time and just send the tv to be recycled from the start.
We have all Panasonic tvs now, so hopefully won't have premature failures. 18 months is a pretty short life span for a tv, not impressed with this RCA/Samsung for sure.

You all have a Merry Chrisymas and happy New Year.

Pull your mains and check the transistors and diodes again. I'd probably bag it if you find shorts.

    Update:
Received second Y main and Y buffer from Retech and installed. Checked the transistors and diodes on the Y main before installing. No shorts found. X Main had been checked, no shorts found. Verified all of the plugs and ribbons are seated properly and locked in place. All screws installed in the panels.
Watched the screen as I turned it on the first time. First click on- There were some lines that flashed blue for a second and then two more clicks- nothing. Seems I am back at sqaure one. Three clicks of the relay and no worky. This time I did notice a green LED that slowly flashes on a small panel in behind the output board. Could have been flashing before but I never noticed it.
Removed the Y buffer, and turned on, still clicks 3 times and off. Unplugged the X Main and clicks once and apparently stays on. Appears to be an X Main problem again, but I am not sure of much at this point.
Any suggestions before I call it quits on this and blew a bunch of money for nothing?

I agree that the panels rarely are at fault in these Samsungs.

Re: RCA 42PA30RQ plasma tv problem

I was finally able to contact Retech Tv and explained the situation, and they are sending another Y Main and Y buffer. I metioned replacing all 3 boards to be safe, but I guess it is their call as the X Main tested maybe ok.
The guy metioned that the panels can short out even though there may not be any visible cracks, although he stated it is on seldom occasion that they see a bad one.
So, I will see what happens, and let you know how it ends up. Hopefully good, because if it doesn't work this time, it is probably headed to the transfer station to get recycled. "Gotta know when to hold em, and when to fold em".

Especially given a good number of the Y-buffers are damaged after the screen cracks (which they are pulls from, cracked screen sets.)

I personally don't trust the old Y-buffers and the tests performed to verify their states in these thin-profile Samsungs, but they rarely fail. Also, I'd perform the same heat sink component tests on your replacement X-main and Y-main before installing them.

Panasonic TC-P65ST50 plasma in protection mode after incident
    by HonkBeep04
Hello everyone! I picked up this 65" ST50 plasma TV for $80 on Facebook marketplace two weeks ago. I have the basic electronic knowledge of a teenage computer geek, having assembled laptops and PCs and messed with soldering and software.

This afternoon I decided to disassemble it to mitigate a buzzing noise. This is a well known issue for this TV ever since they were new. The popular solution is to replace the loose internal screws for ones with lock washers, preventing any future buzzing. I figured that I could just fully loosen and tighten all of the screws securing the...

    Samsung PS51E550 Plasma TV
    by ArMaaN376
    Hello,
I am having Samsung PS51E550 Plasma TV. While the TV was working, a crackling sound heard & video went off with audio still ON. After switching it off & ON, the red LED on TV blinks six times & then off.
Opened TV cover & observed foll
    a) Green LED on the small PCB blinks at @5-6sec ON & off for 3-4 secs. Red LED on logic board ON
b)Vs & Va on power supply board raises momentarily to 209v & 58v resp & then drops.
    c) Cold test on Y-main board shows all 3 pins of FGPF4536 IGBT short to Grnd.
How to confirm Y -Buffer board...

    Panasonic plasma TX-P42ST50 - 6 blinks
    by jm1234
    Hi,
anyone able to provide the service manual for old plasma Panasonic TX-P42ST50E?
It turns off almost immediately (0~5 seconds after pressing the on/off button) and starts flashing the red diode 6 times.
I disconnected the left-hand side board (SC?, both the ribbon cable and the power cable to it) and also another ribbon going to bottom left board. Then the led signal is 8 flashes. According to service guide to another Panasonic plasma it would mean the left-hand side board is faulty. But I'm not sure it 100% applies to my model.
I checked that board for any obvious faults...
