OK, I have a portable DVD player that was given to me. These things are a dime a dozen so its just been sitting in a drawer for a few weeks. I finally got around to opening it up and think the problem is a bad cap on the power/input board. The thing pretty much does nothing. If you can get it to open, it won't close. If you put a disc in (which requires you to force close it), it will spin but won't play. If you don't have a screwdriver to take it apart, you won't ever see that disc again. Power will turn it on but then none of the buttons will work. When I opened it I noticed the cap I mentioned above. It is a 10uf 400wv. ESR is 3 ohms. Capacitance tests at 9.02uf. Cap has a blue stain on the top. I've seen many caps leak brown or black but this is the first time seeing blue. Voltages should be 12v and 5v. I'm seeing about 10.6v and 4.8v. The 4.8v I guess is pretty close but the 10.6v is about 17% short of what it should be. So, I have 2 questions. 1, could the low voltage and low capacitance alone be the cause of the symptoms? And, 2, the cap is a 10 uf 400wv. What is 400wv and what should I replace it with? I can't find any 10uf 400wv caps at Digikey.

Re: Memorex DVD Player-MVD2016BLK 10uf 400wv cap?
OK, I figured out that the "wv" just means working voltage. So its just a 10uf 400v capacitor. Any suggestions for a suitable replacement?------------signature starts here------------

I usually do go with Panasonic. I just wasn't sure which series would be best for this application.------------signature starts here------------

They dont seem to have any in the fm, fr or fc series in this format. But Ive always had good luck with the panasonics pretty sure the eb series will work fine for your purpose.Liberating magic smoke one part at a timeComment

Well, cap was definitely bad but not only problem. Can't believe it but I actually found a service manual and its very detailed. Its got data sheets on the boards so I should be able to fix this.Attached Files------------signature starts here------------

Well, a blue mark on the cap might be a from a QC check, someone with a pen putting a mark on it.
BUT, there is a higher chance that the secondary side capacitors are bad. See if any of them have rounded tops, or have odd capacitance readings. Also test those little 5mm diameter caps on the power supply too!Muh-soggy-kneeComment

Re: Memorex DVD Player-MVD2016BLK 10uf 400wv cap?
I seem to have shorted the power supply while testing. I need to order some smaller test probes for my meter. I was wondering about whether that mark might have been from some type of QC. I might have zapped the IC. My probe slipped of the 6 pin and shorted 5 (ground) to whatever 6 is. No rounded caps.------------signature starts here------------

LOL that has happened to me many times. I just get a project working, and while fiddling with it I usually manage to pop it... xDMuh-soggy-kneeComment

Re: Memorex DVD Player-MVD2016BLK 10uf 400wv cap?
I just got my new Fluke multimeter a couple weeks ago. Still only have the original probes that came with it. I'm going to look on eBay right now. This isn't the first time I've done this myself either. I think a set that have a sharp, fine point would be much more suited to this type of work anyway. In addition, a set of tweezer probes and alligator clip probes would be quite handy.------------signature starts here------------

Re: Memorex DVD Player-MVD2016BLK 10uf 400wv cap?
I really wanted Fluke brand probes but they just weren't in the budget. I ordered some generic probes made by Uni-T something, and some alligator clips that slide over the probes. Fluke makes a really nice deluxe electronics test set but its like $160. I'll get it in a couple weeks but can't afford it right now. The probes I ordered have a fine, sharp point. Less likely to slip off. For now, until they get here, I'm going to put some heat shrink on the probes and just leave the point exposed.------------signature starts here------------

If you can find just the fine pointed ones....
These are the ones I use and I love them!

OK. I wish I would have known that before I ordered the generic ones. Would have only been about $15 more than I spent. I'll add them to my wish list. Thanks.------------signature starts here------------

by sam_sam_samIf I remember correctly this indicates a battery failure the other day I had to turn off the power going down the driveway to do something and forgot to turn it back on and the battery went dead but it charged back up and I thought everything was okay but apparently not because now it refuses to close and the battery power light and the line power light goes off when you give it a request to do something I have had so many devices that the battery have gone bad I am sick of it...

by corrizeHello, I will have to solder a very small FPC connector (pins : 0.3mm), on the pcb of CMOS sensor, it is very close. I was surprised by movie on ytb, someone soldering directly with hot air directly on the sensor without kapton, nothing.
CMOS sensor seems resist to high temps.
But I also directly saw sensor broken because a blocked motor at the corner became very hot and probably bent the metal frame and cracked the sensor.
I have low melting point solder.
I will probably test hot air directly on one of plastic connector (I have a lot) at 320 degree on a test... -
