    Re: vizio E320-A1 not working

I've reinstalled the main board. The PN of the little 8 pin eeprom with the white dot does begin with 25. So I have 5 items to test. How to test each and what I am looking for is not clear to me. Can anybody please instruct me?

I sprayed until it got nice and frosty, then pressed the on button more than once. The same thing happened that has been happening for the past several days...nothing. So now do I test the ics? If yes I need instructions please and thanks.

          Re: vizio E320-A1 not working

From watching youtube videos by repair guys, Vizios have a lot of problems similar to mine. One vidio specifically addressed my problem but on the E320-A0; mine is the -A1 which is a bit more detailed. The repair guy tested an eight-pin eeprom similar to the one pointed out by dskall in post #76.

Assuming the black probe should be grounded via something on the pcb itself, like a screw, I tested each of the 8 pins and some were around 3.3 dcvs and some were mVs and some were 0 whatever. So I am guessing that eeprom may have problem.

I'm here hoping one of you, realizing I know practically nothing, is willing to guide me. I'd buy willingly a new main board BUT they no longer are available. One thing I've learned from all this is there are simple solutions. It is not necessary to throw into a landfill an entire TV; it is fixable. I want to learn just what is broken, then I'll go to somebody who can fix it, but won't be able to snow me.

          Thanks.

            Re: vizio E320-A1 not working

E320 suffer a lot from bad eeproms and there are lots of eeroms on ebay etc. Was hoping freezing or heating would confirm the problem. That's a cheap and easy fix.

There are main board repair kits.
BTW, so let you find the bad component/s, do you have the proper tools to do surface mount component level repair?

"Here hasn't helped. Will somebody answer my questions re how to test or tell me about another online place that can?" sorry to hear that from you.

                    Re: vizio E320-A1 not working

                    1) Look up the spec sheet of the EEPROM and study on how it function and see which pins are for.
                    2) Buy an oscilloscope (and learn how to use it) and your DMM so you can look at the signals of the EEPROM.
                    3) And to go further then try locating the schematic diagram so you can trace signals and Voltages to see if they are correct or not.
                    4) Search how to test EEPROM. I.E.: http://www.microchip.com/forums/m214728.aspx
                    5) Or get EEPROM (u409? or U403? due to more than one version of the main board) from shopjimmy or main board repair kit.

                          Re: vizio E320-A1 not working

I'm sorry, dskall, you feel that way. It seems the underlying assumption by most participants here is that I understand everything said and how to execute on all suggestions given. I don't. I need an "ICs for Dummies" manual. So I've watched oodles of videos, including, budm, the one you linked re the Vizio e320-A0.

Of all the videos I've watched ONLY 2 have either shown or mentioned to what the black probe should be connected to ground. One said "on the main board near the ic being tested" the other simply grounded it via the metal in the back. So, I finally just stuck the negative probe in a metal hole in the back of the tv and tested every eeprom and voltage regulator visible hoping I was doing it correctly. Results below.

                          budm suggested?
"1) Look up the spec sheet of the EEPROM and study on how it function and see which pins are for."
...Google was useless in helping me figure out where the heck to find spec sheets. Thanks for assuming I know more than I do.
                          2) and 3) these suggestions go beyond my level of competence at this point.
                          4) The language used at http://www.microchip.com/forums/m214728.aspx
might as well be in Greek, Russian, or Chinese.

                          TEST RESULTS
All readings are DC vs except where noted. All eeproms ON THE BOARD are upside down. So I flipped them over on paper and started the readings from the pin at the top left. The pins with white dots are all, therefore, bottom row left end.
I'm listing the ics starting at the ic at the top right, going counter clockwise ending at the ic at bottom center of the main board. See photo for more info.

Post 89 #5 "5) Or get EEPROM (u409? or U403? due to more than one version of the main board) from shopjimmy or main board repair kit."
Go to shopjimmy .com and type in your TV model number and then which main board you have, shopjimmy shows you how to get the correct main board P/N thewn look at all the EEPROM replacement for you board number so you can locate the EEPROM part designator it may be U403 or U409, once you know which U that is then look at the printing on top of the IC and search for the spec sheet for that EEPROM so you can see which is what so we can probe the correct pins of the EEPROM. Without know the EEPROM number to get the spec sheet then you will not know which pins to test..
So get the correct P/N of your main board first.

With all due respect, budm, you may be an electronics wizard, but your command of English is lacking to the degree that what you write is not intelligible. Your sentences are incomplete and incomprehensible.

NOT A COMPREHENSIBLE SENTENCE: Post 89 #5 "5) Or get EEPROM (u409? or U403? due to more than one version of the main board) from shopjimmy or main board repair kit.
NOT A COMPREHENSIBLE SENTENCE: Go to shopjimmy .com and type in your TV model number and then which main board you have, shopjimmy shows you how to get the correct main board P/N thewn look at all the EEPROM replacement for you board number so you can locate the EEPROM part designator it may be U403 or U409, once you know which U that is then look at the printing on top of the IC and search for the spec sheet for that EEPROM so you can see which is what so we can probe the correct pins of the EEPROM. Without know the EEPROM number to get the spec sheet then you will not know which pins to test..
So get the correct P/N of your main board first.

I did go to shopjimmy.com. I did search there for numerous P/Ns, including the main board P/N which is out of stock. If I had gotten results there to help me I'd not come back here. I just listed in my post #92, including P/Ns in the photo, ALL the info I've been able so far to assemble.

Are there any older dudes hanging out here who speak in full comprehensible sentences and can communicate?

Sorry, English is my second language!
So what id your main board P/N?
Do you expect me to be able to read all those numbers on the barcode sticker using that picture in post 92?

If it turns out to be bad EEPROM or bad regulator, what are you going to do next since you do not have the tools to do SMD repair or any experience doing SMD works?
BTW, sorry if the question is not clear enough for you.
