Samsung Plasma PS43D450 with cracked screen

    Hi

As I am new to this Plasma thing and to learn a little bit extra on what and how, I bought this Samy plasma with broken screen cheap so that I could understand some bits of it.
When I bought this, the guy said he had seen the display (but I doubt it).
At his house when he connected the power to the tv it made cracking - loud buzzing noise and - no display.
While I was bringing it to my place in the car, I smelt a little burning thing & doubted if it was from my car, but it was not. Reaching home I checked the panel and it was cracked quite much and at the bottom where the crack is running there were some burn marks inside there, so I realised what had happened.
After removing back cover and couple of times connecting power to it, it made some buzzing noise, eliminated all the boards etc one by one but found that only the bottom board when removed, it does not buzz. I think thats the control board.
I checked other 2 thread on our forum but their panel was intact, mine is not.

Anyways I am here to learn and diagnose the things if possible.
Please excuse my knowledge on these things as I am quite new to this.

The pic on panel suggests following voltages
    Va (58), Vs (207), Vsc (-185)

Connecting power, Va and Vs does come to that point and then starts dropping fast, Vsc could be checked only on Y-sus and that too starts dropping from -185 to -9
The pother points I could find +5v and +15v remains constant and does not change.
As there is no power switch near to me I had to push/pull the power cable to the board.
[No Pwr] -- [Pwr] -- [AftrPwr] --- [RemovePwrCable]
    # VS_ON [0] [3.26] [0] [0]
    # PS_ON [0] [3.26] [0.16] [2.9]

I have mentioned AftPwr status is just within 1-2 sec status of connecting power, which means 3.26 comes on only for 1 sec I guess, not even 2 sec.
The PS_ON pin, when power plug is pulled, it immediately goes to 2.9 and stays there for few min and then starts dropping to 0

I have also noticed this, connecting -ve terminal of multimeter to the chassis (body-ground) and the +ve terminal to the 2 heatsinks of PSU, I get -105 so I was scared to touch that for checking if its hot or not.

These all tests were done after connecting all the boards & cables back. Also now when I have kept this display pane on very flat solid surface, connecting power cable, I do hear a little buzzing, not that loud which it used to do before.

Of course I am not expecting to change the display, its just for me to understand and option out bad component if possible.

    Thanks

When a plasma screen is cracked, it will almost always buzz. This does not indicate a fault, other than the screen being broken.

You should not be touching anything with your body when the set it plugged in
230v is bad enough but parts could be at 400v.
Even when switched off remember this is a faulty set so high voltages could be retained. If you want to check switch off then test for a voltage as you did
before touching. - or use a thermometer?

Are there any test point where I can check which part is broken as Va & Vs plunging all the time and does not remain steady

The plasma panel is broken. The TV will not function with a broken plasma panel. The repair involves replacing the plasma panel, which is generally uneconomical.

There is probably nothing wrong with the boards. The broken panel is causing your voltages to be unstable, causing the buzzing, etc. There is no way to troubleshoot good boards with a broken panel. If you keep at it though, you probably will end up with the boards bad too, as they are being severely stressed by trying to drive a broken panel.

So I guess with the broken panel there is no way to check any components..??

Only with a scope and by isolating each board.
However, even then, you can only verify the Y-main and X-main.
But the boards rarely fail when the panel is cracked.

                  Hi tom
You are right that board might not fail, but unless I wouldnt have noticed the burnt part on the panel which is a bit too long 3 inches long, I wouldnt have doubted on any board, which obviously means the short circuits were quite strong and lasted for a while in turn it might be possible of some damage to the board.

Re: Samsung Plasma PS43D450 with cracked screen

In the worst case the only boards that could be damaged are the y-main, y-buffers and x-main. If the PSU still puts out ~200V and ~60V it is good. Note that if it is putting out 200V/60V with plugged in boards, then the y-main, y-buffers and x-main are most likely OK because they almost always fail short.

The control board, main board and address distribution boards are guaranteed to be OK. The main board is a common failure so should be easy to sell.

                      Hy,
I have the same TV however with a good display. My problem is that I plug it in and for a brief moment the screen comes on and then shuts down.

I replaced all the boards (twice) with boards from tv`s with broken screens.

                      What can be the problem?

                      Thank you

Did you replace the IR / button board?
How can you be sure cracked screen parts were OK?

Yes, tried the IR spare as well. and I think that it works it responds to commands.

As for the boards... I have 4 power supply unit boards, 4 AV boards , 3 x,y boards , 3 sets of buffers, 3 invertors.

All it does is switches on for an instance and then switches off. I measured the voltages and except for the stand by 5v and the 15v output all of the others are decreasing in a few seconds from the initial voltage.

Since the AV board is what controls shut down, I cannot understand why replacing it hasn't fixed the issue. If the screen lights up briefly the plasma panel is most likely OK, though try with the address buffers disconnected.

I tried, still the same thing. Only this time I get a much brighter screen (for a brief moment) and after that black.

The LED flashes for a few seconds and then stops. If I try to change the channel/ source / volume etc i get the fast flashing red led light (as normal) so theoretically the remote and ir receiver are ok.

I have no idea what to do whit this tv, I`ve invested over 150 pounds just for boards ..

I tried once to turn it on just with the x supply connected to the power board (without the y one) ... that blew up the x board...

I have tried another main power board, av board and so on (as I said I have around 3 sets of each boards).. still nothing.

If the display flashes it's probably OK but there could be a Vda (address line) short which is a panel failure.
