How much life does a recap job add to a TV?

I bought a fairly cheap TV, it's an Emerson 39" so not the best brand in the world but not the worst. I'm going to recap it in hopes it will last longer without issues. I'm replacing all the Jamicon and Su'Scon caps, they're ALL rated at 85C!!! I also increased the voltage on all the 25V caps to 50V. I know the rest of the components probably aren't the best. The big caps are nichicon. Think the recap will make much of a difference? (In the pic the originals are still on the board)

No need to increase the cap voltage though, that's one thing they get right. But 85°C???

Bad caps kill TVs in 3-5 years. Sometimes bad caps which outlive most expectations will last as long as good caps -- but it's rare. Good caps, I still have equipment with switching power supplies that are 25 years old with Chemicon and Nichicon, no problem.

Is it just me or does that PSU look underdesigned?

It is not just you. The heatsinks are pathetic. Four diodes instead of a bridge. Barely any output capacitance. 85°C caps (apparently.) Looks to use a two-transistor circuit for the standby power.

It's built to bring down the in store price, then die in short order.

But it does use Nichicon caps! In the primary. Where they are under less stress than where they are REALLY needed.

I increased the voltage cause that's all I had were 50V caps with that capacitance Yeah the heatsinks are pathetic indeed. Good thing it will be running in a cold room (60F) most of its life. Should I replace those 470uF caps with 820? Might help a bit. Look at how long some of the leads are!!!!

            Mid/late 80's Nichicon Yellow Caps
            by nick3092
I recently acquired a set of Bose Roomate speakers from the mid to late 80's. Basically the right speaker cabinet is completely passive, and the left one has the power transformer and amplifier circuit in it. Out of curiosity, I opened it up to see what the circuit looked like. Looks like they used all Nichicon VX (2x 4700uF/16v for smoothing off the bridge rectifier), a couple random Nichicon SE series sprinkled on the board, and what really caught my eye - 2 yellow sleeved Nichicon caps (both 1uF/50v with no real series marking. Below are pictures of the caps. The only thing not shown in these...

HannStar Hanns-G HC194d LCD monitor repair
            by momaka
Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

Seasonic B12 BC-550 – barely 2 years old and with BAD CAPS already!
            by momaka
I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

no-name Radeon 9600 XT recap and cooler
            by momaka
I've been seeing a lot of cheap-looking (but not always so cheap) no-name AGP video cards on eBay for a while. They started popping up quite a bit when the market for AGP cards became more alive all of a sudden due to interest in “retro” PCs. One thing that struck me about these cheapo cards is that they almost always seem to come with garbage caps - including the abominable Sacon FZ. That aside, though, I've been wondering about the rest of the quality (or lack of?) on these cards. So I decided to satisfy my curiosity yet again.

This one was actually suggested to me by ChaosLegionnaire....

            Heathkit IO-4205 Power Supply Caps
            by eryjus
            Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."
