VESTEL 4215 HD - Flickering screen

    Good evening.

I have a Vestel 4215 HD (Plasma) of which the image started flickering something like 3 to 4 weeks ago. As days go by the flickering gets worse and worse. Where initially the flickering would go away after a couple of minutes, it now stays.

The flickering appears to be mainly present in the larger lighter (white'ish) areas of the image.

Any idea which part/board might be causing that and how I could remedy it?

Thanks in advance for any good advice.

I have recorded some video if that would help.

    Kind regards,

    Franky

I have never actually seen a "Vestel" branded TV. I knew they stick other peoples' names on their TVs but didn't think they sold them under their own name. Vestel have a bit of a reputation here as being "inferior"... to put it lightly.

The first step is to take pictures of your TV's internals. This is best done using sunlight and a half-decent camera.

We have seen plenty of Vestel flickering issues on LCDs, it is usually down to failing poly-capacitors. It would be interesting to see if Vestel based plasmas have the same issues.

Here's the video of the flickering, and then of the electronics (on 90 degrees angle - sorry about that)

Do you mean the slight pulsating on the video? I can't see much flickering.

It has an LG 42X3 or 42X2 panel but I have never seen one of those flicker before, it also uses the LG power supply which has decent capacitors on it. The only thing Vestel about this is the main board.

          Hi Tom,

          It is flickering badly.
I'll see if I can make a better video.

Like I posted above, it is mainly when the image has a lot of white/light colours.

          Kind regards,

          Franky

Most older plasmas flicker quite a lot with a brighter picture. Some people can see it more than others. It may be normal behaviour. I can't explain though why it would get worse over time though...

Here is a better video of the flickering image.

Can't really look at that a whole evening without getting a headache.
The flickering occurs independently of the video signal source (scart or HDMI).

Re: VESTEL 4215 HD - Flickering screen

If I were to suggest a fault, it would be those two 450V caps... but I'm half suspecting that's normal flicker, and something in your environment has changed to make it more noticeable... it's very hard to tell.

BTW, try your camera in bright light. The shutter will open for a shorter period, so the flicker might be more obvious on video.

Another thing to check if you can is the Vs voltage. It should be around 190V for this generation of LG plasma. Check if it's dropping too low on a multimeter, if you have one available.

                  Tom,

                  Thanks for your reaction.

It's not something in my environment that changed. It really is a very distinctive constant change in luminosity of primarily the light areas in the image.

I'll see whether I can measure the Vs.

                  Kind regards,

                  Franky

I've been reading some more posts - thank you Badcaps Veterans - and found a swollen 470microF 35V capacitator on the power supply board.

Guess this might be the problem source?

I have replaced the faulty 470/35V capacitor by a brand new 470/50V capacitor and the flickering has disappeared.

However I now have small red and green pixels in the image (when looking closely). I've read in this forum that I need to tweak something to get rid of that. What do I have to do and where do I find that on the boards?

                        Kind regards,

                        Franky

Tom, there is a small board behind the metal plate on the right lower side of the TV (when looking from the back side). That's where I found the swollen capacitor.

Thank you for the interest you show.

Do you see Vset_up and Vset_dn (sometimes ramp_up or ramp_dn) on the large left-hand board (looking from the back of the TV)?

Carefully tweak setup one way. It doesn't matter which, but watch the image carefully. Better, worse? If it gets worse, reverse the direction. Do the same with setdn.

                                  Hello everyone,

We recently replaced the OLED screen on a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Gen 10. After about a month, the replacement screen began to flicker. Initially, updating the IntelĀ® IrisĀ® Xe graphics driver resolved the issue for about a week. However, when the problem recurred, updating the driver again had no effect.

The flickering only occurs once the system reaches the Windows login screen. Interestingly, if we disable the Intel GPU driver or connect the laptop to an external monitor, the flickering stops. We have tried installing two different replacement screens,...

This device came in due to the screen flickering if you use the touchpad or external mouse. It will flicker black when this occurs. If you use the touchscreen, the behavior does not appear. Also, if connected to external monitor, the external monitor is not affected by the flickering. I did a good amount of research on this, and concluded that it is due to the display driver. HP does not offer Windows 11 drivers for this model so I got the replacement drivers direct from Intel. I installed them and the problem...
