    magnavox 42mf231d 37

I have a magnavox 42mf231d 37 that would need to be smacked on the right side (facing TV) for a year - 1/2 or whole screen would go black - sound ok. Now something burnt & no picture just sound. On the board (Y main PBA CODE: LJ92-01200A) I found a bad looking cap (C5040 - swollen) and I think it smells & looks like R5090 & R5028 are fried - I am having trouble figuring out the colors on these fried resistors (red, black, ?? burned -looks like gold, gold - several of these at other places in board) - anyone know what the correct resistors are for these two resistors. If red black gold gold - 2 Ohm 5% ?wattage?voltage

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could you include a pic and that would better help me find your info.

They are a funny colour, they may be fusible and\or flameproof resistors. If that is the case you should use proper replacements for safety.

In any case, if you can find the service manual it will tell you the power rating of the resistors and if they are a special type or not.

Where would you find these special type of resistor? I can order "normal" resistor for this but I didn't see any saying fusible and\or flameproof resistors.

You'd need to go to the big names like Digikey or Mouser etc.

I could be wrong about the resistor of course, I am going by what I read here: http://www.repairfaq.org/samnew/tvfaq/tvflamepr.htm

I found someone posted a service manual here: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=12799 but it does not seem complete. Maybe there is another one on the Internet somewhere

MOX (Metal Oxide). I tell the Wattage from the picture, you will have to take the dimension and match the size:
              Here is 2 Ohms MOX:

                Re: magnavox 42mf231d 37

Well I replaced my cap & resistors but when I fired her up an IC blew up on the powersupply - an 5L0365R -blew the face off & arched. I think its time to throw her in the trash.....Maybe that was the problem in the first place...

Try replacing the 5L0365R, it might have been faulty already and the reason the resistors burned in the first place. As written on the site I posted:

These usually serve as fuses in addition to any other fuses that may be present (and in addition to their function as a resistor, though this isn't always needed). Since your FR has blown, you probably have shorted semiconductors that will need to be replaced as well. I would check all the transistors and diodes in the power supply with an ohmmeter. You may find that the main switch mode transistor has decided to turn into a blob of solder - dead short.

                      Re: magnavox 42mf231d 37

I see in the datasheet that the 5L0365R has a feedback pin, perhaps the feedback circuitry is faulty somehow and doing damage.

Probably help to find out what relation the burning resistor has with with the 5L0365R

The fact you had to hit the TV previously could point to a bad connection, perhaps some joint is open circuit leading to this problem
