Over the last year, my answers (and thus the guides) have gone from

Give a man a fish and you feed him for one day.
Teach a man how to fish and you feed him for life.

There are several hundreds of people asking for help and only 3 to 5 unpaid volunteers here.

Writing guides addresses the scalability problem above.

Okay so am I testing SMD fuses or replacing caps first?
Testing the fuses takes less time than it takes to type out this sentence. All resistance tests are done with power off and device unplugged.

Fair enough, I will read through another long technical document and see if any of the terminology used matches with the criteria selectable from the parts sellers.
Ahh, but my example how to choose caps does hint at using Panasonic caps. Specifically, FR, FM, and FC (in that order).

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.

We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.

Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

Again, in my example, you don't have to go through all those menus. It automatically narrows down the choice to one cap.

When you say largest cap, do you mean the big black one (in my case/photos) near the part of the PCB labelled "HOT"?
Yes, that one by the PCB labelled "HOT". That is the large filter cap and doesn't undergo the same stress as the other ones on the power board.

I think I will just replace the board. Then I can try to repair the original board with new caps so I have a spare. That can be held onto in case the replacement craps out or it could be sold. Most of my soldering experience has not been on PCB's so this way I could practice with less consequence.

I appreciate the help but it would be even better if I did not have to deal with a condescending tone on each reply from retiredcaps. I have read all your "Tutorials" at length (those in your sig and those you have directed me to) and I have jumped through all your hoops. But I am not an electrical engineer, so yeah, some of it is going to go over my head. I too mod on other technical boards, but try to put things in terms that a newbie audience can understand. Sure it is frustrating explaining what is basic fundamental knowledge to me. But I figure that I am there to help, not lord my knowledge, jargon and skill-set over others that do not do what I do for a living.

Don't get me wrong retiredcaps, I appreciate your help and what you do and have to put up with here (both as an experienced professional and a moderator). I just think you could be a little less abrasive about it. Delving into something unfamiliar is daunting enough.

I don't even know why I bother somedays to even try and help people.

See if you take something out of context enough, you can make whatever you like of it. I thought my response was very diplomatic and respectful.

My response to your current query is that if you did not continue to "help" on here, what else would you have to complain about and alienate anyone less experienced than you with? I really think that maybe you should let someone else give it a shot now and again. Maybe just a personality conflict? tom66 was capable of putting things into layman's terms without feeling the need to chastise me serially (with multiple reply's) for each question posed. That was why I was trying to ask him directly. But it seems regardless of content, there are bragging rights here for being the first to respond. I guess it's just about the "post count" here under the guise of being a Forum where people can learn?

Maybe one day you will need to delve into a technical field that you know very little about. If that does come to pass, I hope people choose to be accepting and assist you, and not make an example of you and provide a life lesson as is likely warranted.

Don't worry, I am done here. I will unregister and find another forum where there is some content and know-how not just attitude...

I'm a full time electronics engineering student. Most of the time, I'm studying, or relaxing from studying. I -do not- have the time to constantly respond to people. Sorry if it seems picky. Retiredcaps is doing a good job!
Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!
