    Quick Vizio Plasma question

I had a friend bring me a vp422hdtv10a a couple of weeks ago.. He had already bought and intalled a new power board and it didnt fix it as he was lead to believe by reading around on the net.. Well I dinked around unplugging z and y boards and decided it was the y board... So I ordered a Y sustain and buffer board.. I installed them and now I could at least get it to come out of stand by and the white vizio icon would light up, but not picture still ... But I was hearing a dull noise coming from the new buffer.. So I pulled the new buffer off and stuck the old one back on and BOOM its working.. so it looks like the new buffer is DOA.. So I have been seeing people saying that you should replace the buffer and sustain when doing replacements. My question is, am I risking doing damage to the Sustain board if I run it with the old buffer?

If i was doing this repair I would replace both buffer boards with new ones

It could have been a loose connection or a cold solder joint on one of the boards.
