Samsung PN43D440A5D No display Has Sound

    Hello.

First i would like to think everyone here for the information on this forum. I came here looking for help on a Samsung plasma. I have spent the past hour reading some of the different post and i am thankful for the information here.

I have what i think is an unusual problem. I have been working with this TV for quite a while. I probably should have given up on it by now but i am committed to using this as a learning experience. I have a diverse electrical background but am new to working on TVs.

I have a Samsung plasma PN43D440A5D. I purchased this TV broken to fix. The TV would not come up. It clicked on and off repeatedly. Thru doing some basic troubleshooting i determined the X-sus was bad. When i disconnected it the TV would come up and give me the start-up sound. I ordered a used board off ebay. Changed it and it worked.... For about 3 days of heavy use.

I tried again to troubleshoot the problem and once again it was the x-sus. This time i tried to dig a little deeper into the TV to look for a possible cause of the failure. After a few attempts the y-sus seemed to be contributing to my problem. I had disconnected it too look at the back side for signs of a problem and when i put it back in the TV wouldn't boot without it disconnected. I then ordered both boards from ebay that were supposedly out of new sets with broken screens.

I have changed both boards and now the TV will come on and function normally for about 10 minutes until the display shuts off but i still have sound.
With the TV on but once the display goes down Vs Va and Vscan all drop out. The Led on the logic board goes from a steady flash to on for 5sec and off for 1sec then back on and so forth.

I want to believe that i just got a bad part from ebay but don't know how to tell for sure which is bad. It is also possible that there is still another problem that could have been cause for the failures.

One other thing i think is worth noting. Every time the TV is power cycled the picture is reset to defaults. The default is dynamic. each time i power up the TV i change it to movie as dynamic showed way to much red. but it continues to revert to dynamic.

Any ideas? I have learned a lot working on this TV but its starting to get frustrating. I do not have a service manual for this TV but a similar Samsung service manual suggest that Va and Vs should stay high with everything disconnected. I do not see that and was told by someone helping me that they would only come up when the boards were connected. Only when the TV is on and working do i see Va and Vs maintained. Should they be high with nothing connected?

    Try this -

    Turn TV off.
Press INFO, MENU and then MUTE on the remote control. Then press POWER.
TV should start up in factory settings menu.
Go to Factory Reset - execute the option.
TV should turn off after a few seconds.
    Turn TV on again.
In startup menu select "HOME USE" not "STORE DEMO".
    Retune and reconfigure.

Thank you for your reply. I didn't know about the service menu. And think about the demo mode.

Incase someone finds this later looking for help
This TV was a little different in getting to the menu. i had to enter menu, mute 1 8 2 then power.

I did go into the service menu and preform a factory reset. The tv was in store demo mode. While i suspect that will fix the picture reverting to dynamic it did not fix the picture going out. I will test the dynamic changes once the TV cools. Whatever the problem is seems to be related to temp.

Try using a hair dryer on the TV parts to see if you can make it switch off quicker.

When it goes wrong - any clicks from PSU? I remember seeing a 50" Samsung with cold joints on the PSU causing it to shut down after some time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ya8zJMShcs

Well as of now it will come on but the display doesn't come up at all. so whatever the problem is it has gotten worse.

I don't recall any switching when the display would shut off. I would just turn around and it be off.

I feel like it is just a problem with one of the two boards i changed. One of the boards i changed is a little different from what was originally on the tv. All the numbers match but the revision is different and newer. I may start there.

What are my chances that this is a bad panel. I have never suspected the panel but it is being suggested by the ebay seller who sold me some of the parts. I believe he is just trying to defend his parts but there could be some truth in his suggestion.

Almost zero - the panel can never be intermittent. It is either working, or not.
Your problem is likely a loose connector or bad solder joint. Try pressing on the control board processor - Samsung control boards seem to often fail with regard to BGA joints.

Turns out i had just gotten ahold of some bad parts. Stumbled on another TV just like this one so i was able to swap some parts. changed the sustains and the tv seemed to work fine. I didn't let it run very long though. I have new used parts on the way. Just a reminder that you have be very careful with ebay parts.

Thanks to tom66 for all the help.

Check on Samsungs web site to see if there is a firmware update for your model. Samsung has added several updates lately for panel x-main failures and are requiring firmware updates after replacing the boards.
You always want the latest firmware.

To see which version you have:

                  Go into service mode.
                  or
TV menu, go to support, and select Contact Samsung, should display the version number on that screen.

Thats good info. Thank you. I downloaded the firmware update. I tried installing in on the new TV i purchased as a precaution but it is a newer firmware version than what that have provided for download.

I should have the parts to put back in the problem TV on Monday or Tuesday. i will update the firmware on it then. I do wonder if that is what caused the first new board i put in the TV to fail.

                    Thank you.

I must say i will be glad to have this repair behind me. It has driven me nuts.
