Re: Sharp Aquos LC-46D64U stand by with new boards!

Haha i really doubt he knew to set the model id plug. I mean id never have ever guessed they would have such a crazy system. Its not even jumpers like anyone sane would use ... why is it some bizzare plug system that requires 9 x 2 positions ????

Also when you replaced the heatsink on the new main board after it came in, did you use the existing goop / heat pad / thermal interface material? Did you clean it off?

(im talking about the white or pink paste that is between the heatsink and main board.

I Know! it looks like they spend more money on the jumpers and plugs than spending money to make the set more reliable.

            I still use XP PRO.
I was doing by using ACROBAT "camera" function then paste it into Paint, then save it as JPG format, but it does not come out very clean.

I zoomed in then used print screen , copied it into mspaint, moved the pdf then print screen again and peiced the 2 together in mspaint.

So not exactly the easiest process. You might try print to pdf if you have acrobat or nitro pdf (thats what i originally meant to use, but my pdf reader crashed for some reason when i tried it)

                OK.

U can print screen then load paint and paste it into paint. Cut out the part of the image that you want select new and then paste again.

By the way, when you got the new board, did you check to make sure the Model ID plug setting is correct per page 3-14?
Nope, I was not aware that the jumpers would come different based on version. I did need to change one of the jumpers, but it is still booting up with errors just as it has previously.

Is there some why that I need to clear any errors during the initial boot up after the install of a new main board?

I actually had some thermal paste prior to this TV issue, for when I build out computers (which is why I thought I could work on this TV with no problem, haha).

But, no I didn't replace it in this situation; there actually was a huge block of the stuff, more of a heat pad than anything. It was about a half inch think and is connected to the heatsink and makes contact with the processor. It didn't seem like it needed replacing, and if it did, I didn't have an extra about.

Also, again, I am a graphic designer/web programer by trade, and I have access to adobe photoshop. I can take care of pages of the service manual for us and turn them into .jpg's - just let me know the page.

I'm writing this on a stupid touch pad so it would let me wife cashkenny at first.

Windows 7 has the snipping tool. Its much easier tan using paint give that a try.

IDK what would be causing the boot to basically freeze in the middle (that appears to be the case, as normally if the boot was detecting an error it should start flashing the error lights), but it would probably be either a bad main board / mismatch with the tuner, or bad eeprom, or main board not getting proper power. From other sharps that have been worked on it seems that it wouldnt not be the inverter boards that would cause it to freeze in the boot because it completes the boot, then turns them on as well as the tcon at the same time and monitors for an error. And from my experience with most TV's they usually dont care if the tcon isnt connected.
Well, we know it's not the main board, because that's new, and has the correct jumper settings for the model in question. What would be the best way to test the tuner board and the eeprom (which is a new term for me - please clarify if you could)?

                            Thanks.

Re: Sharp Aquos LC-46D64U stand by with new boards!

The eeprom is the flash memory that stores the settings / boot method for the TV. Computers and TV's have this (on computers its where the bios is stored).

In the old days and on some really oddly designed new tvs its a 12 or so pin chip that fits into a socket (so that if it goes bad it can be swapped out). Usually now its just a very small smd chip.

When you update the firmware it is saving to this chip, so if the firmware was damaged it wouldnt be able to boot, because of errors on that chip.

The eeprom on the block diagram says its marked on the main board as ic2004 and is a br24l08f chip. If you can get us a close up picture of that chip we might be able to tell you if its removable.

I cant remember, but when you replaced the power supply and used your old main board, did you get exactly the same problem? or was it a slightly different problem?

With a new power supply (which I have since returned), and a new main board, I got the exact same results, which leads me to believe that the eeprom isn't the issue. No? Unless the new chip was also effected by an error in the boot some place?

If you tested both mainboards with the same power supply and got the same result then your problem is probably not the eeprom, it could only be the mainboard if there was a very very common failure point for these tvs.

Also this problem is the same problem as it had before you even took the tv appart to begin with?

Are you able to disconect the tunner board (unscrew it / disconect the bridge), and then test the tv without the tuner board connected at all?

Yes, I can do that very easily. Do you think that the error code may change? If it doesn't change, do you propose that the Tuner board would then be proven as the issue?

if it works / gets closer to working with the tuner board removed then the tuner board is bad.

If it doesnt work still then tuner may or may not be bad.

I honestly dont know if it is able to boot with the tuner board missing, because the tunner board looks to have a media switch as well as the whole audio section of the tv. Both of which are fairly important for the tv to run.

I'm new to this forum and don't have a lot of experience but I'm working on the same model Sharp. I remember reading somewhere that if you replace the main board on this model that you have to flash the firmware with the Sharp firmware for your model or it will not work. Can't remember where I saw that to post a link or if it's true but just thought I'd put my 2 cents in if it helps in any way.
