    Guy has a JVC LT-47X579

1080, but he claims the picture is black,
with horizontal, multi-colored lines on the
    screen, with no sound.

He doesn't believe the screen is cracked, but
who knows what's really there, because
I've seen cracked screens that gave out
    horizontal colored lines before.

But it would seem at least the inverters
    and CCFLs are working.

What you guys think, perhaps T-con or
    main board?

    He wanted $50.

Good price for just a T-con fault.

How certain are you that it's only the T-con?

Also, there isn't much on Ebay for this unit,
      and I couldn't find a T-con there.....maybe
      Shopjimmy?

I suppose it won't be the end of the world
if I have to order both T-con and main board.....
      I can always resell
the unneeded board on Ebay again.

Not 100% but I've seen it before and it was a T-con voltage regulator.

You mean you've seen this problem on this particular model?

          Or a similar model?

I suppose you fixed it at the component level, by just
replacing the bad regulator? Again, I couldn't find
a T-con for this one on Ebay.

Another thing to consider: 47" screen is about the
limit you can put into the backseat of a Honda Accord!!

            On a Samsung.

JVC are quite found of using Samsung panels in their higher-end models, so it's more than possible that it's using the same Samsung T-con. You might not find it listed under the model, but it will probably be compatible.

Yes I fixed it on the component level. Replaced the 30p regulator.

            Biggest car - Peugeot 206 (my dad's) - so essentially a 42" at most!

Well since he lives close to me, I'll have him deliver it.

I'll offer him $10, since I may not be able to fix it......we'll
              see if he bites......

I think it's quite fixable and there are plenty of others who would offer at least half his asking price.

Understood, but keep in mind I live in a pretty small city,
which isn't very financially healthy at the moment.

Case in point: the TV I recently fixed, which I was hoping
to sell for around $300 on Craig's, ended up only fetching $220.

Economies of scale and all that. So if I can't sell for very
much, I certainly shouldn't pay very much either.

                  But you're still right: I'm a cheapie!!!

I want to be in your town so I can enjoy monopsony like you do.

Yes do bill for your time. I picked up a 42" Toshiba + stand for £50 and I'm selling it for £300.

But don't people still give their dead TVs away for free in your
town? At least here in Tucson, AZ, dead TVs just get in the way
after awhile, when people realize they aren't worth much to
                      anyone except a repair person.

                      $78 for a dead TV? I've gotten to $40, but I'll
need to get some more experience before
I shell out more than $50 for a doorstop.

I wish. I have paid for every TV I have repaired. Usually £1/inch screen size. This is a good approximation from 26" - 47", although the biggest I've repaired so far has been 42" (several times in fact... three plasmas, two LCDs.)

Yes - most of them end up at the dump, where I buy them or they get crushed.

I have reasonable troubleshooting experience, I think, as well as a lot of equipment. I think I could find a fault reasonably easily, but repairing it is the tricky part.
