    How to repair DVD drive???

Got someone asking me if I can fix a built in dvd drive on their tv. I've never messed with a tv with built in dvd, are they a big hassle? how hard are they to find? If it were me I would buy an external dvd player but hey if they want to pay me to fix it, I'll try my best.

On most LCD TV's, the DVD players are mostly open assemblies, i.e. it's a DCU (Dust Collecting Unit)
Sort of like a computer DVD-ROM drive minus the metal casing.

I don't know what the problem on yours is, but most of the time it's either:

    - messed up loading mechanism (if it's slot-loading)
    - bad spindle motor (needs "help" to spin up)
    - bad laser (usually not worth fixing.. too expensive or unavailable)

She said it sounds like it's spinning but won't play. Could just be a dirty laser IDK, haven't got it yet. If she want's it fixed, I'll probably just replace it if I can find a replacement.

I've had luck just cleaning the laser, especially if the unit will still read CDs fine but no luck with DVDs.

I pull dead DVD's out of the junk pile. The pros fix them by pulling the lens assembly and doing a thorough cleaning, something you might do if the unit is expensive to replace (and you know how to pull lenses. I don't!). I'm only saving junk DVD writers I already have piles of so I just blow air into the assembly between the lenses hoping to knock out a spec of dust. The lens assembly is suspended on some fine wires so don't blow hard or bend things.

Surprisingly this 5 minute procedure has about a 40% success rate, a lot of drives for almost no work.

**Need Help Unlocking BIOS and Hard Drive on Dell Precision 5820 Tower**
            by federalhouse
            Hi everyone,

I'm in need of assistance with a Dell Precision 5820 Tower. The BIOS is locked with "Dell Security Manager," preventing access to the HDD-1 hard drive.

            **Background:**

I recently purchased this Dell Precision 5820 Tower from a recycler who salvages equipment from abandoned office spaces. The computer was left behind by its previous owner and was password locked. Given that it can run Windows 11, I saw this as an opportunity to upgrade my setup.

            **What I've Tried So Far:**

bug of the month: write caching setting for the hard drive in device manager
            by ChaosLegionnaire
i recently bought a new wd re4 2tb with 2014 datecodes. when i got around to testing it tho in victoria hd tester, the write speed was very slow at 14 mb/s with a 256 sector transfer size. when i increased the transfer size to 1024 sectors, the write speed increased slightly to 44 mb/s. read speeds and sector verify speeds were fine and at normal speeds.

so i just ass-u-med the drive's poor performance was due to it being an advanced format drive and i was using it on winxp. when i tried cloning my system disk to this wd re4 2tb drive and writing to it in linux, the write speed...

Attempting Data Recovery WD20EARS series HDD Reads as 0 byte drive.
            by abajor
I was wondering if there is a knowledge base on troubleshooting HDD failures and when it might be viable to try certain repair/recovery techniques.
I recently got a WD20EARS 2TB Drive from a customer in hopes of retrieving data. The drive reads as zero size, I can't hear any head activity but it does appear the platter is spinning I can feel some gyroscopic action picking up the drive.

As a shot it the dark I bought a donor board and swapped the rom chip. Same issue zero byte drive.

I'm assuming that the armature is no longer functional internally so no data can...
