Sumvision Cyclone Micro Media Player Adaptor

Ok got this media player here it powers up a red light but when you use the remote to bring it out of standby, it switches to blue for a split second then goes back red. Nothing is coming up on the screen either.
    its all surface mount stuff.

Takes a 5v dc power pack that I have cracked open and it seems normal.

Wondering if anyone could help me

Have you checked if the plug pack is giving out 5V under all conditions? I had an ethernet switch that was going a bit funky due to its adapter. It would remain idle at about 7V (supposed to be 9V, probably bad caps in the adapter) but when it tried to do anything the adapter voltage dropped and the switch reset.

might go to this op shop that has a basket full of cords, power packs, random stuff. Ill find something the same volts, the one I have plugs are converted from China to Australian.

measure at the device while powering up.sounds like the power supply is drooping under load.

I have a multimeter but not sure on how to use it can you suggest some good tutorials.

Can you post a picture of your meter? Or a link to the manual?

So what are the factors what can cause a power supply not putting out the output its meant too?

Re: Sumvision Cyclone Micro Media Player Adaptor

Bad caps or bad rectifier, among others. The power supplies are intended as black boxes. If you find the output to be low, there is a problem with the supply. You'll probably have difficulty putting it back together, as they are laser welded I believe. A better solution is to get a new adapter with any connector, then (carefully noting polarity) chop the plug off the old one (with some wires) and new one, then solder and heatshrink the connections.

You can test the output of the power supply by using your multimeter and a spare piece of wire. Touch the negative to the shield (outer connection) and stick the wire in the middle, with the positive probe connected to the wire. Measure on 20VDC.

Re: Sumvision Cyclone Micro Media Player Adaptor

                        It reads 5.45
I'm guessing this would be all good then?
what would I look for now?

Would it be possible that someone flashed it with wrong firmware

Well, it's quite high. Have you tried testing it with a resistor for load?

                              5.44
                              5.45
                              5.46

Is all I am getting with a resistor if you meant by doing what I was doing above?

I mean connect a 22 ohm 3W resistor to the output to check if the output drops under load.

Ok I have tested it with the actual device switched on. it still reads 5.45 and drops to 5.44 when I try turning it on.

Is that a better test than you suggested or wait till I get a resistor, then do your method?

Yep, that's a better idea (I just thought it would be more difficult.) Adapter is fine, then. Most likely is a problem with the device itself.
