Philips 50PFP5332D/37

I don't know if this should be in general electronics or here, but the question i have kinda touches both bases.

Heres a little background:

I got a Philips Plasma 50PFP5332D/37 tv. The power supply had several bloated caps. I re-capped the entire power board with panasonic FM & FC capacitors. Put it all back together and the tv fired right up. I played with it for 30 minutes or so then turned it off. 2 days later i go to turn it back on and i wasn't getting any display. The blue LED lights up on the front but no picture or sound. Took the back off and now a cap on the either x-sustain or y-sustain is bloated.

So:
Is it worthwile to recap the x and y boards for good measure or just replace the one faulty cap and see how long it lasts. I'm not to concerned with the price of the caps themselves, i'm more wanting reliability and the fact that this tv weighs almost as much as me and i'm getting tired of moving back and forth from the work bench.

I don't think the cap that is bloated now was bloated then, but i honstly don't remember even looking at the other boards. I basically just saw the power supply and that was as far as it went.

Thats what i figured but....Do the large caps in the x-main fail. Usually the large caps in the power supply are never replaced due to the fact they don't endure the stress the smaller ones do. I'm going to replace the little caps just unsure about the big ones (200V)

Do the large caps in the x-main fail.

1) Post a picture of them.

2) Also list the manufacturer and the series so we can determine their quality.

The brand is Samwha. I'm pretty sure they are a junk brand. The 2 little ones are M series. The Large Green ones are PF series. Also the large green ones are 150uf 250V.

Series are normally 2 letters. I see PF, PT, and RH.

RH is their caps for ballasts. From other past badcaps threads, PF and PT are mysteries since they are not on samwha's website.

Lacking that information, I can't tell you what a suitable replacement might be, but I'm guessing Panasonic FR

I'm guessing the large cans are just general purpose caps and there are a number of choices at digikey/mouser for 150uF 250V.

I'd just replace the one with the bulging top. I believe it is for one of the supplies generated on the board.

I wouldn't call Samwah a 'junk brand', but they do have problems with consistent quality, certain production lots are notorious for early failures. This is unlike CapXon, which is known for consistently early failures.

I replaced the cap and the tv turns on but i'm getting a buzzing over in the upper left corner area.

When the tv is first turned on you can hear the audio for about a second or two followed by a brief flash of snow then the picture comes in. I've had the tv on last night for 4 straight hours with no problems. Turned it off then went to bed. Turned it on this morning for about an hour with no problems again.

But the buzzing is very annoying and i just have this gut feeling something is going to or is already failing.

I measured the dc outputs on the power supply

VS 200-215V (206.1v)
VA 61v-65v (63.2v)
VG 15v (14.65v)
d5V 5.3v (5.13v)
5VSV 5.3v (5.16v)
5Vstb 5.3v (5.32v)
12Vssb 12.4v (12.25v)
VSND_POS +17v (+17.22v)
VSND_NEG -17 (-17.12v)

So is there anything else to check? The panel is a Samsung S50HW-YD07

Loud buzzing is usually indicative of a broken plasma panel. If it is coming from the upper left corner then it is possible that the glass nipple on the panel has been broken. It is in the upper left corner of the panel in the open cylinder coming off the panel frame. If it is broken then eventually all of the gas will escape and you will not get a picture. At that point it would be too expensive to repair and will only be good for parts.

It is possible that a component could be failing on the Y-sustain but it would be hard to pinpoint until it actually fails. The fact that you still have a picture makes me believe that the Y-main and buffers are fine but I could be wrong.

The glass nipple is still there and as far as i can tell not broken. The buzz is definitely coming from the ribbon areas on the y-scan drive board. Im putting my ear from top to bottom of that board and i'm hearing it. It gets quieter as i move towards the center of the tv.

Is this one of those just run it until it fails situations?
