    Vizio VP 322 power issue

Hello everyone. First post here, I just found this site and thought I would give it a try.

I have a Vizio vp 322 tv. It has power and will turn on the first time with picture and sound. After about 3-7 minutes, there is a click, and the picture and sound turn off. The Vizio Logo remains white. Pressing the power button turns the tv off and the Vizio Logo turns orange. Pressing the power button again will turn on picture and sound but after 10-30 seconds they both turn off. Again, the Vizio logo remains white until I turn the tv off.

I know a little bit about nothing about tv electronics, however I am an electrician apprentice and understand basic electrical theory and trouble shooting. I down loaded the service manual for the tv and are ready to tear into this. I would greatly appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction.

    Thanks, Donnie

Re: Vizio VP 322 power issue

Hi- Have you already checked on the web? There are articles which suggest that the popping off is due to bad caps on the power board but of course it may not be. To get you started have you searched the forum- chances are you may not be the first person on here to have had the problem. Even reading unrelated threads would have told you what you need to know to get the best help from the forum and illustrate what you can input that might help others in the future. You will see that clear photographs of YOUR boards are almost an essential- I have seen someone spot a cold/cracked solder joint on a picture the poster had missed. The pictures need to be added using the manage attachments and I think "plainbill" has info regarding this on all his posts.

Anyway as its Christmas I suggest you read the post headed "Vizio VP322 no picture no sound" which will enable you to get started and show what you need to ask.
I know you have said you are an electrician apprentice but it is useful if you can post what tools you have and if you can use them ( soldering iron , voltmeter, esr meter, oscilloscope (wow I wish)

Re: Vizio VP 322 power issue

Hello all. My first post. But I have been reading and learning from you all for a few months. I repaired my own Samsung plasma with bad caps. Found another like it that clicked but would not power on. No bad caps. Repaired by replacing the main board. More expensive than caps, but repaired.

I also recently repaired a Vizio VP322. Opened it up and found obviously blown caps. Replaced with Panasonic caps. Another success and I have enjoyed the TV for a few months. My successes are all the result of the information you all have provided. Thank you!

But... I had the opportunity to pick up another VP322 with what I thought was the same problem. I thought I would fix it and give it to my mother. Opened it up and was surprised to find no obviously blown caps. Bummer! Symptoms are: when plugged in, Vizio logo turns yellow as it should, when power button is pushed Vizio logo turns from yellow to white as it should when powered on. But there is no picture or sound. No clicks, no pops, no nothing. I have limited technical knowledge (ok, none) but I have a multimeter and have learned a bit from reading here and trying my best.

I would appreciate any guidance you can provide. Thanks!

Oh... And I checked the fuses on the power supply board and they all had continuity.

Capacitors can sometimes go bad without bulging, especially the crap brands.

Thanks Tom. Yes. That was what I was thinking. They may be bad but not showing. And I bought extras of the ones I replaced on the first TV. So I think I will change them out first and see what happens. That is certainly the cheapest first step. I will update later.

I replaced the typically suspect caps on the power supply. No change. Since I still have the first VP322 I fixed (identical tv), I thought I would open that one back up and swap boards until I found the cure. I thought I would start with the power supply, then the main input. But in doing so, am I risking damage to the good boards?

Power supplies are very hard to damage.

Unless the power supply outputs a too high voltage, the same thing applies for main boards.

                  Give it a go.
