PHILIPS 50PF7521D12 black screen (with some tips)

    Hello,

This post is intended to give some help to people experiencing the same problem and to thank the help found in badcaps posts.

After searching things about problems with PSU on Plasma, I found the problem on mine :

    Brand : Philips
    Model : 50PF7521D12
    Chassis : LC4.41E AB
    PDP : PDP50HW-YD01
Problem : black screen, the power can light or not, can pass from red to green but the screen is always black.

After having removed the rear panel, if I power the TV, on the PSU card, the led8002 lights and a relay goes on, after 1 second, the led8001 lights and a relay goes on, after 1 second, the 2 led "stop" and the 2 relays falls down.
On a small daughter card on the PSU, a very small led brights a message : 4 times on and a long off, and the message repeats.

The concerned PSU is labelled LJ44-0018A.

After watching all the references and indications on the PSU, I found the explanations for the led message :
    1 time for VA, 2 for 12V, 3 for VSCAN, 4 for D3V3, 5 for VS, 6 for VCC, 7 for VSET, 8 for VE, 10 for PFC_OK, 11 for OVP and 13 for D5VL.

With my PSU, the 3.3V falls down very quickly after a power up.

I have replaced the 2 famous caps C8059 et C8060 and all is now fine.

There was no external problems with these two caps. The previous owner had the same problem two years ago, and a technician had done the same job. The original caps worked for 4 years and the new only for 2 years.
It's always the same problem with high frequencies in PSU.

If somebody had problems with a different message timing to confirm the diag it could be fine.

This PSU can be found in other plasma (to be completed) :
    - Philips 50PF7321D37
    - Philips 50PF9431D37
    - Magnavox 50MF231D37

In my case, I have to check the TV for a longer period to confirm it was the only problem.

P.S. : If you find some mistakes, don't hesitate to send me the correct sentences in a PM. Thanks.

Good info. What were the original caps? Wonder if he used long life ones... or just "RadioShack specials".

I don't have any idea of the original brand !!! (I will try to find the caps used by the previous technician, if I can find the olds caps ...)

I have done a test with olds caps (from dismantled devices !) : the TV worked fine for an hour before the bottom part of the picture started to flash between the piture and a black one. At the end (10 minutes later), the TV returned to standby with the LED on the control board of PSU repeating the message 3.3V failure.

I have ordered Panasonic caps (FM serie) for a final exchange (I hope so).

Perhaps a temperature influence on the tests, at the beginning in the garage (below 10°C) and the last in the house (~20°C). I don't know if the little noise from the PSU is normal (the frequency seems to depends from the brightness of the picture).

I found two foam buffers (high density !) in a poor state. What is their use ?
And where do they go (behind the PSU but under what parts ?)

Do they feel like they have a metal shield but foam internals? They are EMI shields to reduce radio interference produced by the TV (Plasmas produce a -lot- of EMI). Not super criticial...

            I found the old caps : YAGEO (SEK ?) 3300 uF 16V and 35V !!!
The 1 hour test was done with olds caps YAGEO (SC ?) but 6.3V
I made an other test yesterday evening with the new caps from Panasonic (FM) and nothing worked !

There's only one connector using 3.3V, it's CN8006 for the Logic board.
I will test without connecting the logic board with a dummy load on the 3.3v

Re: PHILIPS 50PF7521D12 black screen (with some tips)

I found the problem on the PSU board : when removing the two caps (C8059 and C8060), I probably damaged the board, there was no more contact between the GND and minus of the caps. I repared this problem and the PSU is now good. I got picture and sound.
So I had the oppotunity to test during a longer time and saw a problem on the bottom of the screen : I can have all the lines, sometimes only one on two is black and somtimes all are black.

I tried to make a small pressure on the connectors located on the Y-Buffer board and most of the screen went red or black : I can start to clean all the connectors of these boards. And after, I'll try to see if there's somthing wrong with the X-Main driving board...

              Not so easy to repare

Can you post a picture of the problem?

The first picture shows the problem obtained after the first test, it

The second one was after having pushed a connector on the Y-buffer (with TV on...)

The third one is the result of havind disconnected and reconnected all Y-Buffer connectors (TV unplugged this time). This screen is displayed only few seconds before the PSU falls in safe mode displaying error code 13 (VCC problem). I will try to check if there's another GND problem with the PSU this morning.

I've checked the PSU grounding and found a problem on it : the +5V and +3.3V grounds are not well connected. The connection depends on the position of the board, I've wired them together. After this, the PSU restarts without falling in safe mode : I got sound but the screen stay black. The remote controls is working as the DVB-T demodulator. Probably something damaged yesterday with the PSU problem ???

The X-driver connectors are loose or the panel is failing. It could also be a control board problem.

I think that the PSU is definitively dead : no more 3.3V and 5V...
