Sony Triniton will no stay on(KV-30HS420)

My Sony trinton played excellent until a couple of weeks ago. Now,when I turn it on, it immediately shuts down(in 1-2 seconds). It will not stay on at all. It is model KV-30HS420. It played well with no problems for years. I'd like to keep it. Can anyone give me an idea of whats wrong with it?

      Hey oldpro..
Initially it blinked(red light) 3 times and went back off. I then retried it and this time it blinked 5 times and the tv stayed on. Now, It's back up. I've turned it on and off about 8 times now and.. it keeps coming back on.(the problem seems to have fixed itself). I'm going to let it stay on now until it goes back off. What do you think the problem is(or might have been)??? I will let you know if it goes back off and how long it stays on(I'm timing it)....

The TV is still playing continously, after 24 hours. the problem seems to have rectified itself but,,, I'd still like to know what it was in case the problem happens again....

This really sounds like bad solder joints. Likely places are around heavy parts such as the flyback, and heat sinks (horizontal output transistor, vertical deflection circuit, power supply)

When the set is on there are no "blinks". Do not count the blinks that lead up to the power on. The only blinks that count are those that start after it fails or fails to start.

The problem did not fix itself. It is an intermittent problem. While the set runs you can do nothing. It may continue to run forever. Once you turn it off, it may or may not turn back on. It may or may not turn back on in service mode. This model stores in a rom errors that occur. The service mode sequence is Display-5-volume up-power in less than 3 seconds. Don't use it. You can do more harm than good if you are not 100% sure of what you want to do. The diagnostic start sequence is Display-5-volume down-power. There you will find a list of the last errors in order. This is if it powers on at all.

The power will turn out to be 2 IC's. I strongly urge you find a competent, local TV shop to do the work. This is a well known repair. If you bring the chassis to the shop most that I know will be glad to get the easy repair and only charge a very minimal amount which will be worth it to you.

Well... It did it again. It would not stay on again, after working continously for more than 2 weeks... I cut it off and unplugged it from the power supply for about 18 hours... It's working again now(albiet, temporarly) .. but it's staying on.... Any Ideas on what part or board might be the culprit???

I've discovered that the tv will stay playing when it's on.. even for days.. etc.
problem is, when you turn if off, it wont come back up unless you unplug it from the wall and let it sit about 24 hours.... when it's back up it will continue to play.. until you turn if off... any idea what it might be????

This sounds like the famous MCZ3001DB issue.

Easy repair. And a good Trinitron is always worth the repair. The mid/late 2000's Trinitrons were the last good CRTs ever made.

Here's my writeup of swapping the two ICs on my 34XBR960:

                      https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showpo...6&postcount=49

Note, I used sockets, and some of the kits for these TVs come with the two ICs and sockets. Don't use sockets! It wasn't until after the fact that Wizard pointed out that TVs have crazy thermal cycles and sockets are a bad idea. Sure enough about 8 months after the repair my TV started acting funky again with turning on. I reseated the ICs and all was good. I need to take it apart again and get rid of those sockets sometime. So, solder the ICs directly, and you'll be all good!

Those MCZ3001 chips do not last and will need replacement again at some point. I haven't heard of others who've used sockets having thermal cycling problems. Admittedly I'm not an expert but I would be more concerned about accidentally toasting or shorting the fragile board's connections during a re-resoldering than having to reseat an IC in a socket.

If a socket were to be used, can anybody comment on the best socket type/method to prevent unseating due to thermal cycling? Would machined pin (rounded) or ZIF be better?

ZIFs without gold contacts seem to be very rare though.
