Magnavox 32MF231D/37 Fixer?

    Magnavox 32MF231D/37 Fixer?

    I found this Magnavox 32MF231D/37 at goodwill for $25. And just as I suspected, no power. I opened it up and found 3 swollen caps on the power supply (circled in pink)....big surprise huh? Then flipped over the power supply and noticed a burn (circled in red) which kinds looks like 2 solder points touching each other (correct me if i'm wrong) I flipped it over to see what part it was and it appears to be the blue ceramic caps that caused the burn (see close up)and the solder points circled in yellow look suspicious also....maybe someone tried resoldering. I can tell someone tried repairing this themselves as some of the screws are missing including the ones holding down the power supply. The caps are CapXon 1200 uf 35v. What brand would be a good replacement? I will be ordering them from Digikey. As far as anyone can tell....is there anything that looks supicious that I missed? Plus one of the caps is very loose! just kind of flops around on there.

      I'd use Panasonic FM series caps P12406-ND or P12407-ND depending on the dimensions. I'd also go over the soldering carefully. That scorch mark isn't encouraging, you might wind up buying another power supply.

          Actually I ordered the Panasonic FM caps last night and then noticed your advice this morning.....I was afraid i'd hear something like that concerning the scorch mark! PlainBill did it look to you when zooming in that the solder at that part is 2 solder points touching when they shouldn't be? Should I replace the blue ceramic caps also considering that is where the scorch mark is? Also I noticed that the power switch/Infrared Sensor - Philips 3138-158-64921 has a broken leg....I included a picture, can I just solder that back together or do I need to buy a replacement?

              The scorch mark reminded me of what can happen when someone lays a live board down on a piece of metal. This MIGHT be the service manual. If you are lucky, it will include the schematic for the power supply. If you are very lucky, it will even include a print of the power supply circuit board, so you can see what is actually connected.

              As far as the IR sensor, just solder the legs together, at least for now. All things considered, this TV is sounding like a 'disposal' set - some 'technician' (to use the term loosely) combined several sets into one good set, then combines the remains into a second set which went to Goodwill.

                  PlainBill thank you for the manual link....I already found the manual but the one you supplied was also correct....just for a larger model. Unfortunately the diagram layout is pretty vague and doesn't really show me what I was hoping for. The more I look at it, the more I think you may be right as far as it being a disposal set. I also noticed that that USB Board is missing. So what i'll do is wait for the caps to arrive...put them in and if nothing promising happens then i'll just bag it and re-donate it back to Goodwill. No point in me wasting a bunch of money and time on it. I was at least hoping that I could swap out the parts for my troubled Proview 40" but the parts aren't compatible from what I can see.

                      I'm looking at the power board for this same model television and it appears to have 3 blown caps on it. Being a relative newbie, I'm wondering if you can have a look at the uploaded pics to confirm that the caps are actually blown. I'm pretty sure that black ooze at the top is a bad sign.

                      Additionally, did the Panasonic FM series caps P12406-ND or P12407-ND work out well for gorr35? Which caps did you use?

                          Yes those caps are shot.....I did use the Panasonic FM caps but it didn't do any good....not the caps fault, there just appeared to be bigger issues at play. I never did fix it, it's still sitting in my storage room.

                              Many thianks for the help! I've replaced the caps and the TV works great. My friend is delighted that the fix was inexpensive and quick. (easy for him to say; I did all of the work)

                                  I use a wire solder with hot air, I tin the board and chip before with iron and I use good flux.

                                  I will have to solder a LVDS connector (40 pins, laptop pc), I saw a solder paste in seringe, good quality (it does not scatter).

                                  Can someone recommend any good UV solder mask? But i need a solder mask that will stand high temperetures. The thing is...sometimes i have a bigger cooper ripped from the board, lets say mosfet pad... i reconstract it with cooper sheet, then i "glue it" with solder mask...then i use UV light...and let it cool a bit. After, i try to clean the cooper of extra solder mask..and till that part all is ok. But, when i use a soldering iron to solder that pad/cooper...the solder mask gets weaker or destroyed and finally the pad is ripped again from the board .

                                  I’m using an achi ir sc pro rework station (gave up on my Achie ir6500 - don’t recommend)

                                  I’ve managed to get my rework profile somewhere in the correct region (after a lot of trial and error) to get the old sockets off and reflow new ones back on again, the problems I’m getting is not all of the solder balls are re-attaching when re-flow occurs. I know this because when socket is removed pads still look clean and have no solder...
