Trying to diagnose a Philips HTS6500 DVD Player

I have been testing it with its proprietary speakers and subwoofer detached. I have been testing it with no connection to a TV.

The fan's running. I have trouble cycling among the sources (DVD/AM/FM/MP3), but I believe the buttons on the panel are working. The original problem was the player would "eat DVDs". There seems to be documentation about this condition, but I'm reluctant to update the firmware on this thing.

I have also noticed no activity coming from the DVD drive itself. I have manually moved the laser, and its location would not change upon powering up and down. The "guard teeth" that would prevent insertion of a disc when another one has already been inserted are also up, even though there's no disc inside.

I've cracked open the unit. I see Rubycons, but I also see Lelons (bright green). None looked popped, but I have yet to test any of them with my ESR meter. I'm not even sure if there are more boards underneath the two pictured.

    Thoughts?

Re: Trying to diagnose a Philips HTS6500 DVD Player

The first check would be that all the power supply rails are functioning. Use a multimeter with the black lead connected to the case and the red lead to probe each rail.

The fact that the DVD player has no activity at all might mean the small IC which drives all the motors is fried. It usually looks something like the picture I have attached. Look for any visible damage: holes, cracks, burn marks and a faint label are clues.

There is also usually a dedicated IC next to the connector running from the laser head; this too could be damaged although it is less likely. This is the chip which reads the data from the laser; it also controls the tracking of the laser head, focus and the disk spindle, by commanding the motor driver. However, tracking down a replacement may be nigh impossible. It's possible an LDO powering it has failed, which is far easier to replace.

The Lelon capacitors look to be part of a class D audio amplifier output stage. They are unlikely to be at fault. Worst case if they are, you will get no audio out.

Philips MDP 3380/12 Blu-ray Player – No Power, Reset Signal Always High
      by ictc
I'm troubleshooting a Philips MDP 3380/12 Blu-ray player that shows no signs of life. The display remains off, and no buttons respond.

Inside, the power supply is working correctly, and all expected voltages on the mainboard match the service manual specifications. The CPU warms up slightly (checked with a thermal camera), the crystal oscillator is functioning, but the reset signal remains high at all times.

The reset circuit appears to consist of two NPN transistors, one driven by 5V VCC and the other by 3.3V STBY, as shown in the attached schematic. Should the reset...

Hilti PD30 Laser Range meter Error 276
      by Dannyx
Good day folks.....wow, seems like forever since I posted anything here Still alive and well, thank you I guess you could say I've become more independent and able to work stuff out on my own. This one though goes way over my head and I doubt is fixable, but maybe some bright spark out there has an equally bright idea.

So: my Hilti PD30 laser meter quit on me just the other day. It was working fine, I set it down for a while and when I tried using it again it gave me an E276 and wouldn't do anything else. I tried taking out the batteries, all that standard stuff but nothing...

Onkyo DX-V500 Laser Disc Player - weird SMPS fault
      by dkneyle
This relic from a technology path that came to a dead end (but still has historical interest) was brought in with a dead SMPS, which is based around a MK1210 device. I got it going after a battle. It seems to have a strange design - if it's not getting feedback that the secondary is OK it cause the big FET to go into full conduction and overloads resulting in a blown fuse at best or something worse! I'm using a Dim Bulb Tester (70W/230V) which thankfully has saved the day a number of times whilst repairing.

Now, it loads a CD OK. The motor voltage output (which is built onto the SMPS...

      Victrola multi-player - No audio
      by kokopelli75
      Hello!

My mother has a Victrola Navigator player that stopped functioning after a storm. I checked out what I could - all player functions appear to work, but there is no audio output in either the speakers or the headphone jack. I suspect (with my limited knowledge) that the amplifier part of the device is toast. Photo of the suspected board is attached. There's separate boards for front display, record player, etc. This board has a section for power regulation and a section for amp. There's a UTC7266 7+7W dual bridge amplifier IC and a CSC2314F sound processor IC on the board. Visually,...
