I bet no one thought a Delta would ever end up on here, but today I have just that - a destroyed delta. THe fan was branded T&T (Thieves & Thugs ?) and it quit. ..... The cool part is, it still runs

Well, to be fair, it's a Delta, it still runs, it probably isn't gutless, and it was all the fault of the fan anyway.

Certainly bloated and fried though!

CapXon and Ltec would fail anyway... note the unbulged Taicon, those actually seem like OK caps, haven't seen any fail YET. It's less ambient temperature and more ripple current that kills crap caps.

I removed the caps today, and I got a photo with some better light. Now you can really see how bad the heat discolouration is

EDIT: I also took the failed fan apart, and I think there was more to this than just bad sleeve bearings. It looks like there was lots of rust around the magnet on the blade housing and on the motor

Not nice, really. In some worse fans when sometimes the magnet tends to rub against motor I lubricate it with vaseline. Maybe if you will clean it you can as well use itfor conserving again corosion.

I probably won't worry. I have a few spare Yate Loon fans which are in much better condition, so I'll probably just replace it with one of them

EDIT: I probably should also add that the plastic washer which holds the blade housing to the motor crumbled when I took the fan apart.

If that power supply lacks protection circuitry of any sort, that may be why it still works with bloated capacitors.

That one really didn't want to come out (maybe due to the generous use of glue on that leg). The other leg broke was I was trying to bend and twist the cap out of there.

There's me happily using my old Apple PowerBook 1400, then the next time I come to use it, nothing. So I open up the little brown brick (the official power supply) and was amazed to discover the destruction shown in the pik. I have no idea what caused it.

Wow! That really is the most toasty, well-done PSU PCB I've seen. I'm surprised the output choke didn't burn.

Not good.
Although likely salvageable if you cared enough to fix it. I would - extra spare junk fans for the random project never hurt. Sandpaper and a bit of oil is really all you need. When I find a fan that has started to get rust on the stator, I just lube it with machine oil.

As I stated, I use vaseline, it is better I think. Oil just vaporizes or dries out due to absorption in dust. Vaseline is more durable I think and lubricates even full of dust.
