    New Delta DPS-700FB-1 A won't run

I just received the identical unit pictured here . The pictures don't do it justice. It is beastly to behold and requires a 10x magnifier to appreciate the complexity of the circuitry. It has a PIC16C717 8-bit MCU on that side board behind the output wiring in the second picture. That board alone is a real jewel. Beautifully crafted.

    The Problem

    Brand new, will not start.

The fan bumps a bit for 1 spin. +5VSB is on and correct.

Loaded it with 2 hard drives and another fan. Fans spin 1 time. Voltages all bounce up a bit then shut down in < 1/2 sec. I have had it to the point where the voltages are oscillating/pulsing near what they should be at perhaps 4 cycles per second.

What am I missing? Does this NEED to be hooked to mobo to work? Is there a sense voltage it needs to see?

I would hook mine up and jumper it to tell you, but I am not at the same house as it, and won't be until tomorrow.

I do know that this unit has 12v sense on the 8pin cpu connector. Don't know if it would need to be hooked up to a computer to work though. May be worth a try. Make sure there are no shorts on the soldering, make sure if you took out the second pcb out that you connected the long "rainbow" connector, too, and it is seated all the way down. When I put it back together it wouldn't even start because this wasn't seated all the way down.

It's possible that there's a minimum load requirement for the 3.3v rail. The DPS-450CBs I just got do, and that's something the hard drives/fans wouldn't give you.

It's going into protective shutdown. Most likely you're not meeting minimum load requirements, or there's a problem with what you have connected.

Those are usually OEM units for Gateway servers.
Probably has server type minimum load requirements and needs a mobo to run.

I have one around here somewhere that I use to test server boards.
Never tried it with just drives.
If I get a chance I'll play with it some today and report what happens.

            i agree with this.
it's chunky 700w supply and you're not really loading it enough.

out of (lower part) range, so to say.

With 2,3,4,5 HDD and no Mobo -> No Start.
              With P3 board + 2 HDD -> No Start
With Supermicro X7DAL-E [with one CPU] and no drives -> Starts fine.

Appears to need load on CPU +12v Rail to start.

                Got it!

I had loaded all the legs with various high-power, low ohm resistors. It would pulse voltages but still wouldn't start.

On a whim I tried loading the +5VSB with about 100mA and voilĂ !

Removed all the loads and tried loading each voltage individually.

                Results:
It's necessary to load the +12V on any connector with about 400-500mA and the +5VSB with about 100mA. No other loads attached and it runs.

                Experimentation shows:
Hard drive(s) won't do. Evidently the +12V connection doesn't present any load to the PSU initially.

                3 - 80mm fans will do it. Start about 500mA, run 350mA.

                Voltage Measurements:

                +5.05VSB
                +3.33V
                +5.08V
                +12.06
                -12.0
                +4.52PG (gray)

Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions and their assistance!

370forlife has had a similar (no start) problem when connected to a system in this thread:

eh, no-load startup issues are not the same as issues with EVERYTHING hooked up.
