Re: The whole Two Transistor Thing

This is the way I understand it.
The regulation loop controls the ON time of the chopper transistor during the forward period to control how much energy is sent through the transformer during the following flyback period. The small control transistor only takes notice of the opto transistor's conduction state during the forward period.
When ripple develops at the 5V output because of the capacitor going high ESR, the ripple troughs correspond to the forward period, diode reversed biased and the capacitor only supplying load current.
The ripple peaks correspond to the flyback period, diode forward biased and charging the capacitor.
So what tends to happen is the regulation loop regulates the ripple troughs to about 5V, but ignores the high ripple peaks during flyback. This causes the average voltage to be much higher than 5V, although the 431 is conducting heavily through the opto's LED during flyback.
The high ripple peaks also get reflected back to the chopper transistor's Collector/Drain, causing voltage stress and possible failure.

In a bad 5vsb circuit, those peaks and ripple trouphs are only part of the story. Those bad 5vsb circuits are loaded with varying frequency oscillations. They will even sing to you. Try a Fast Fourie Analysis on one of those bad circuits!

Near the beginning of this thread, in post #14, there is photos of a Seasonic SS-250FS
        https://www.badcaps.net/forum/attach...0&d=1249818980
Here is one another so-called SS-250FS,
Same brand of capacitors - PCE-TUR,
but i don't see any sign this one being a 2-Transvestite design.
It's a different board (and appears to me to made later)
Looks like the 5VSB is controlled by a TDA16822 PWM Controller chip
Just goes to show that you can't always judge a book by it's cover
Also highlights the subjectivity of convention.

I guess it is single switcher forward, for 250 W it is enough.

Vizio D50u-D1 Dead Set No Standby
            by fharris1977
Hi. I got a Vizio with no power or standby, and won't turn on with remote or button. I checked the voltages on the connector and all read 0.00V or nearly 0(0.050 ON/OFF pin). None of the pins are labeled STB for standby although I do see some 5V pins. Other than the obvious standby led, which isn't coming on, is there a way to check for standby voltage on this PS. I'm trying to see if my problem is the PS or mainboard. Some Vizios I have fixed with no standby led me to think it was the PS but it turned out being the mainboard. Any experience with this set would be greatly appreciated.

            Hi all.

I started a thread while back regarding TV power supply standby circuitry as it is something I am not quite on top of.
SMPS theory and function is becoming more familiar, however the standby part is still a bit of a mystery.

Anyway, a friend has this TV with the above mentioned power supply board which has no standby voltage, nor any other voltages leaving the board.
The mains AC comes in fine, gets filtered and rectified with power is on the main filter cap as well as the transformer and drain pins of the ICE3B0665J, but that's it.

            Hey everyone!

I've gotten this TV for free, neither have it seen a TV repair man, neither have it been opened before.

This post describes my entire troubleshooting process of this TV.

When I turn it on using the ON/OFF switch at the side of the TV, the light rapidly flashes green, then it stays on, but it does not react to any of the remote buttons, side buttons, and doesn't play audio.

I've taken the unit apart, and I've started to check some voltages:

            • On the P11 connector, there is 15V DC only for a brief moment, then it goes

JSK4228-050 Power Supply Standby voltage changing! (Possible from Wharfedale LTF37K1)
            by reessi
            Hello,

I am trying to re-purpose this power supply that I saved years ago from a tv with a cracked screen for a monitor but that is not really that relevent at the moment. I do not recall which tv but a google search looks like it is from Wharfedale LTF37K1.

You may notice I made some alterations moving some components to the top and some wires which are from a 5v regulator I fitted to the 12v output as the monitor requires 5v. The standby was already at fault from the beginning, it has nothing to do with the alterations...

Years ago it had some bulging caps...

            Yamaha TSX 120 Standby Problem
            by psssst
Hello forum. I've recently been given a Yamaha TSX 120 DAB radio and ipod dock. Its working well however when put on standby its using 6.3 watts. The manual states less than 1 watt on standby. I measured this with a plug in monitor which seems accurate with other items. In use it uses around 7.5 watts. Firstly has anyone who owns a similar radio also got a plug in monitor to check if this is normal with this unit? In the first half a second the monitor shows 0.3 watts which I suspect is what it should use but something is switching it to be almost fully powered. I've searched the manual for eco...
