Ultra Xfinity 600w corpse to resurrect, I hope.

    Hey, folks,

I picked this up for price of shipping. Symptoms were running a few moments then shutting down as described by seller.

I opened it, one of the 2 1500uf 200v main caps had came off the board. Taking the pcb out, I could see evidence of a dry connection, thin solder and black on the plastic insulator sheet under the pcb. The cap had kept arcing until it melted part of the post away (positive I think if that is of use). The other was not securely soldered either as it come off during shipping from APO Europe I suspect.
Anyway, hoping for a miracle first time fix, I cleaned the post and re-soldered it into place.

Nothing. I checked other caps and found none that appeared bad, I then checked voltage at switch, and it was fine (after setting it to 115). I checked the voltage across the fuse and got nothing at all.

Could it have killed the two main caps? What else should I check, I have a digital multimeter but no ESR meter.

I would like to get it up and running if I can since it would be more than enough for my system with room for expansion.

    Hi DixiePenguin!

You may want to read this review on the Ultra X-finity 600w..
    http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php...=Story&reid=23

This review is actually fairy positive compared to many people's Ultra stories.

Personally, I live near a Tiger Direct outlet (a major Ultra retailer) and was used to seeing multiple PALLETS of returned defective Ultra PSU often marked down to $5 or $10!
I was considering buying such an X-connect and one of the techs politely found a way to say: "You don't want one of those!"

Anyhow, a likely cause of Primary cap damage is using the PSU on 230v power with the switch set to 115v. This severely overvolts the caps and they go "boom". You could do a rough test of the caps with an analog multimeter set to resistance check .... the needle will swing towards infinite ohms as the meters battery charges the cap. Of course all kinds of other stuff can go boom too. The fuse should have continuity or nearly 0Ω resistance. The bridge rectifier can be checked with your multi-meter too. For a start.

    Good luck,
    Keri

In another forum I was helping a school superintendent from Australia.
His problem was that a practical joke among the kids had become to flip the switch in the back from 220v to 115v between classes so when the next class came in BOOM!
I instructed him how to disconnect/bypass the switch and using +5vsb to wire it to a buzzer. Now when the kids flip the switch the 'alarm' goes off and they are instantly BUSTED!

        ROTFL!

You sound like the kind of person that puts a sign up that reads:

"Do NOT think about the color Purple!"

"Do NOT press the Red button!"

        "Drink Me"

        "Do NOT Drink Me"

Personally, I would try to find a way to hook it up to orange spray paint.

Unfortunately I was deprived of that in my school days because when you flip it from 115V to 220V nothing happens .

Speaking of meaningless signs how about a sign like this?

I think it's right up there with don't drink this shampoo.

Here's a fun sign I noticed in the movie WALL-E ... I liked it, so I made one like it.

              Actually, it's his bumper sticker!

I saw one a long time ago (Candid Camera show I think) where the was a vending machine the looked like one of those coffee machines that drops a cup and then fills it.

[I've forgotten the actual coin value just picking a nickle.]

The only writing on it al all was by the coin slot where it said "Insert 5 Cents Here".

If you dropped a coin in the slot the machine made all kinds of 'vending noises' and then a ticket popped out of a slot. - The ticket said: "Thank You".
-> And that's -ALL- the machine did.

I have a lot of people bring their computers to me to fix.

I've had a couple that wouldn't power on when the power button was hit. 1 of them was because somehow the switch in the back was moved from 115 to 220, computer powered right back on just fine, didn't charge the customer anything for flipping a switch. Another had the switch set to 220 instead of 115 and it was brand new out of the box compaq, even had the piece of sticky plastic over the switch, so I guess just crappy QC.

                    KeriJane,
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give them a try.

On the subject of nasty tricks, A young person I know (I deny all relation to him when necessary), once used the remote diagnosis feature to set a program in motion that turned off ALL computers in the computer lab at his school after 5 minutes of run time, every time they were turned on. It went on for an hour or so, with the "instructor" unable to correct or discover the cause . Perfect crime since he was the student assistant they called to help fix the problem.
