I recapped this psu with ncc kzh a while ago because it had blown caps. I also replaced the 220uf input cap with a 330uf samxon. Today I powered it up and it works, the voltages are ok and seem stable, but it makes a weird high pitched noise when plugged in (coil whine?). Should I continue using it (is it safe to use)?

Re: Seasonic SS-300FS APFC coil whine
I realize that parts availability might be a problem for you, and you used what you could get, but unless that PSU is a very new, fairly high end PSU, using the KZH series capacitors might have caused the main regulator circuit to oscillate. The regulator loop is designed for capacitors with a certain ESR. Some variation is tolerated, but a significant decrease can cause problems.
If the main regulator is oscillating, it could produce some effects in the PFC circuit.
It would probably be helpful to post more information about this PSU, including pictures.PeteS in CA

Re: Seasonic SS-300FS APFC coil whine
Moreover, if the original 220 uF input cap was a Japanese brand, I'd go with that over the 330 uF Samxon. Samxon are not bad, but when it comes to APFC circuits, I wouldn't trust anything but Japanese caps.Comment

by momakaI know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.
For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

by GjacksonHi all, the PSU originally had a no 12v issue where as soon as I bridged the 5v standby to the ACDC_stby the psu would switch itself off completely. I monitored the voltage on the main filter caps while doing this and saw that the PFC was bringing the voltage up to around 360vdc before shutting down. Given that I saw that as a little low I replaced the PFC feedback resistors from a donor PSU and that got it to power on, without a load no coil whine is present and there is a stable 12v however as soon as I put it in the PS4 it starts whining really badly, however 12v remains stable but after a...

,
My old LG Flatron recently started with coil beeping. This got worse every day for a few days until it also started having power problems.
Now it also went off again after displaying the LG logo, then on, off again, then on and so on...
So far I have measured the power supply unit, which delivers 19.21V and should therefore be OK. I removed the circuit board and connected it to the mains plug so that I could hear the coil beeping.
During the beeping, I pressed on the coils with a non-conductive tool to see if the sound changed and to find...1 Photo-

by 90NinetyI have an R9 Furty Nano ( R9 2XX IIRC ) that I want to put to use , I got it on ebay for quite cheap but, it has some of the worse coil whine I have heard .
I tried putting a long tube on my ear and hovered it around the card while in use , I cannot pinpoint it . However I my educated guess is , that it the whine is an inductor coil and it is one or all of these in the picture . Does anyone know what part this is and what part I can replace them with .
Perhaps likely is that I am missing something else it could be , here is a stock picture... -
by GnatGoSplatAntec BP500U PSU fried in my wife's gaming PC. I smelled something unpleasant last night, so I had a hunch something might be amiss. Woke up this morning to a popped breaker and immediately assumed the APFC cap must have blown. I last fixed it sometime in 2011, there's a thread about it here someplace. APFC and secondary caps that time. Replaced them with Panasonic caps. 10+yrs is probably a good run. It's been running 24/7 the last 3yrs, eth mining with a 1070ti and AFK fishing in Black Desert Online, lol.
Anyway, cracked it open this morning, expecting it to just be the APFC cap... - Loading...
