    General steps in SMPS troubleshooting?

Hi guys so I'm wondering if the real experienced experts can give a step by step in how they troubleshoot these supplies.

For example I always check if there's voltages on secondary but when there isn't I often don't know how to proceed.

Should one, check for shorted semiconductors with power off or look up ic datasheets for switching ics to see if vcc voltages are present, etc

I'm usually faced with supplies that have no secondary voltages but there'll be proper voltage at the main's filter cap

There are a few things to check.

No secondary output voltages: are all rails dead? If so, probably related to a primary side fault, or there's a short on the output. For the primary side, check the Vcc voltage. If that's low, check the Vcc cap and for shorts on Vcc, could be a defective controller IC or a shorted zener or maybe the transistor which switches Vcc on and off is broken. Use your instincts - open resistors rarely fail open without cause, so check MOSFETs and diodes in the same path. Check snubber components for damage. Check fuses. Especially hidden, SMD output fuses!

Using a scope you can see the secondary output waveforms - with experience you will get to understand each portion of these waveforms. For a flyback, for example, you can read back the primary side voltage by looking at the negative period of the flyback voltage (it will be some ratio to the primary side.) This can help diagnose issues with excessive primary side ripple (bad primary side cap etc.)
Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

      Thanks Tom!

So what's a faster diagnosis, voltage testing with the supply powered on or checking for shorted components with power off?

I'm also curious how one determines what side of the supply the fault is on, I remember reading once someone suggested removing the switching transformer and that will help you locate which side has a fault but I never understand how exactly that would help?

You always check for shorted circuit first before applying power and do good visual inspections, you do not know if the unit has been worked on by someone else before or what was done to it so you do not want to cause more damages.

Thanks. Do you anything about the suggestion of removing the switching transformer to help isolate which side has fault? I don't understand why it needs to be removed to determine that

I do not how that will tell you which side is bad, if you remove the transformer then the primary side drive circuit will no longer has the transformer for it to drive.

Hi, Can we use SMPS Bench Power Supply for Laptop troubleshooting?
              by shamsudeen
Hi all, I just need to know that, can i use SMPS type power supply to test and short circuit detection on a laptop motherboard?
I saw 95% of repair guys are using only Linear bench power supply. linear bench power supply is pricy, thats why i planned to get one SMPS supply.

i know that in linear power supply the noise will be very low comparing to SMPS supply....

              Troubleshooting half-bridge smps
              by madan1
Hello everyone, I'm trying to fix what seems to be a half-bridge smps.
The switching controller is sg2525a, which I have replaced with a brand new sg3525a. The low and high mosfets are 1c27ac 6n50. The mosfet driver is IRS2301S.
Both mosfets were tested outside circuit with a component tester and seem to be fine.
With oscilloscope I see ~65khz switching signal on both low and high outputs of the controller, but on the output of the mosfet driver there is switchig signal only on the low output (flat line on the high output).
So I guess the mosfet driver is faulty?

              Mackie Th15 SMPS low Vout
              by madan1
              Hello,
I'm troubleshooting a PA speaker Mackie Th15 (schematics attached).
It is basically a smps with amp and some dsp.
The issue is that on the secondary side I read +/- ~23V instead of the expected +/- 38V. Indeed all secondary side and feedback/aux rails are like 1/2-3/5 of the expected values.
Q2, Q3, C35, C40, C33, C36, C41 and C42 were tested out of circuit with a component tester and read fine. Most of the other components on the primary were tested in circuit and seem to be fine. +HV to -HV on primary is ~330V.
By the way, the ferrite core of L10 is broken,...

              Interpreting Service Manual Troubleshooting Steps
              by michalk3777@gmail.com
              Hello
              I'm troubleshooting a dead Sony XBR-65X810C.
I was able to find a service manual from one of the posts here.
I was able to get through the steps highlighted in yellow, but need some help with next steps. See attached Picture.
              Next step says:
              Check OPWRSB
              R9179 Voltage.
              Is the voltage 0V?

              and one after says:
              Check STBY_MHL
              R9176 Voltage.
              Is the voltage >3.0V?

These are referring to the same resistor, what does OPWRSB and STBY_MHL stand for?
I measured voltage on both ends of that...

practical courses for troubleshooting pc motherboards
              by blues_spirit
              Hello from France,
mon2 kindly advised me to post a thread to ask the question(s) I'm concerned about. I'm new to the forum and I'm looking for practical courses for troubleshooting pc motherboards especially laptops in Europe, if possible in France. I have been a computer network system administrator and a corrector of administration modules for automated programs under Unix. But I really miss the practical "ops" side of troubleshooting. So I would like to start from the beginning: 1.8V, 3.3V, 5V and 19V tests for example, etc...
Do you think this is feasible for me? I...
