    Sony Vaio AC adaptor quality

The first AC adaptor is made from Delta Electronics and it's built like a tank.

    label: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/attach...1&d=1447599918

The reason it stopped working is that the DC cable was nearly torn apart, so I had to open the case to unsolder it from pcb. The ground wire was cut too. I prolonged it and soldered it on AC socket.

    Cracking it open was hard.

Sorry, I didn't take photos before reseating the aluminum case and the yellow tape. The build quality was similar to the adapter shown here:
    http://itresident.com/hardware/repai...ly-for-laptop/

The second AC adapter is noticeably smaller and lighter than the first one. Opening the plastic case was much easier than the other adapter. The plastic cover was thinner and bended when pressure was applied.

The OEM is missing or I can't find it... Despite being lighter and smaller it claims to output the same power with the other psu.

Build quality is not bad, but less parts are used here.

Thermal pads are attached at the bottom of the pcb:

    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/attach...1&d=1447601092

When you buy thermal pads, they always come with a plastic cover on each side.. If you look closely in the following photo you will notice that the plastic cover of the outside side of the pads has not been removed:

    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/attach...1&d=1447601755

    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/attach...1&d=1447601755

    I have some questions:

    1) Is it safe to use thermal pads on live (AC) side? Isn't there a chance of them getting conductive or capacitive with time and heat?

    2) Why they didn't remove the plastic cover of the pads? Is it intentional or just stupid? Can I remove it?

    3) Who is the OEM?

The cover of the psu is this:

    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/attach...1&d=1447602039

There is no chance of something shorting.

If the shape of the translucent sleeve in the last photo is fixed (i.e. you can't just unfold it), leaving the plastic backing on the thermal pads would make it easier to slide the PCB into place - especially if the pads have adhesive on both sides.

What chips are on the buttom side of the PCB?

That one seems to be an LLC-resonant mode converter though without PFC...

I completely forgot to mention that the 1st psu uses a mickey mouse connector, while the 2nd uses a 2 pin connector, so it has no ground.

Another thing I forgot is that both psus use 100% Japanese capacitors.

        No, it can be unfolded

        TEA1750T

The TEA1750 combines a controller for Power Factor Correction (PFC) and a flyback controller. Its high level of integration allows the design of a cost-effective power supply with a very low number of external components.
The special built-in green functions provide high efficiency at all power levels. This applies to quasi-resonant operation at high power levels, quasi-resonant operation with valley skipping, as well as to reduced frequency operation at lower power levels.

Ja, Japan Radio Company or so, shouldn't be that bad.

Re: Sony Vaio AC adaptor quality

The second adapter is hard to repair. I desoldered the cable in case it is cut/shorted.

I also removed the thermal pads to make sure they are not conductive/capacitive.

I then connected the adapter to mains... The led is on but it's flickering. I tried to measure the output voltage and the multimeter showed something like this: 19.4V - 19.7V - 19.4V - 19.7V

I noticed that the APFC "HD 105K" ceramic capacitor has strange appearance. Its surface is not smooth.

Is this cap going bad? Esr micro says it is 1uF 1.65 esr.

1 pic of the other blue cap for comparison:

The capacitor is ok. Tested the adapter with an electrolytic Panasonic NHG 1uF 400V and it did the same. I put back the original.

I don't know what to do from now on..
