    Antec PP-303X autopsy

About six years ago, I bought a massive Antec tower case with a power supply in it. It originally powered an Abit KT7-RAID mobo with a 1 GHz Athlon and five hard drives, until the Abit's RAID controller went bad - thereupon a Gigabyte 7N400 Pro2 replaced it, first with the 1 GHz Athlon, then with an Athlon XP 2600+.

This system eventually had most of the drives switched over to Samsung SATA units, and a sixth Seagate PATA drive to boot. I managed to wear out the PSU's cooling fan, and replaced it. Everything was going great until this morning. While I was recompiling PHP, I heard a muffled pop immediately followed by the kerchunk of six hard drives parking and a dark screen.

Power button? No joy. Then I smelled a faint whiff of smoked capacitor. Uh-oh.

I decided to get something a bit beefier, perhaps overkill, and ended up with an OCZ GameXStream 700W unit. Yeah, it has Teapos inside, but the FSP labeling on the PCB is clearly visible through the fan, and I have a lot more confidence in FSP than ChannelWell.

When I opened up the fried Antec, sure enough, it was stuffed full of Fuhjyyus. As it turned out, I only saw one with visible signs of popping - a 2200 uF that was clearly popped up from the bottom. Oh well... I got six years of mostly 24/7 operation with it.

One thing I've noticed with the new unit - it appears to be a lot more efficient. I've noticed a significant drop in the load reported by my UPS - and my CPU temperature has dropped by about 5° C to boot. I'm not sure if the cooler CPU is due to improved airflow or better power quality.

As it turned out, in its last few minutes, the Antec's power consumption was spiking, based on my MRTG graph of the UPS's load level.

My Antec PP-303X went bad as well. I opened 'er up and found a mess.

At least I am no longer wondering why my system keeps rebooting randomly.

It's 2025: do you know where your 5¼" floppy drives are?
        by eccerr0r
        Oh wow.

As in the other thread I was trying to revive/re-bootstrap an old Apple IIe and wasn't successful reading or writing any disk. Both drives behave similarly.

Then I was wondering, what about my PC floppy drives? I have a HH 5¼" HD drive and a combo 5¼+3½ drive. I tried formatting the disk that wouldn't work in the Apple and it didn't work in the PC either!

Then I tried a HD 5.25 disk ... it won't even touch the disk either! Just like the Apple DD disk, "Not Ready!"

Weird. Seems the PC drive is having trouble clamping...

failing hard drives after sitting for years...
        by eccerr0r
With the discussion about water pumps failing when cars sit for a while, I wonder what people have seen with hard drives. Do people see hard drives failing after being sat on the shelf for a long time unpowered versus a hard drive that's at least powered up at least once in a while, say, weekly?

Wonder if it's worth spinning up the spare spinners once in a while to keep the bearings lubricated?

Wonder how I should best keep my cold spares for my RAID "fresh" for eventual failures of the working drives. Was thinking about keeping a hot spare but that's another...

Evaluating Mechanical Hard Drives SMART Data in Linux (Ubuntu) Using the Disks Utility.
        by abajor
I've gotten into the habit of Looking at peoples Mechanical Hard drives with a Ubuntu thumb drive to boot their system.
I understand the raw values are not really uniform between manufacturers, but I have noticed that high seek and read error raw values at the very least correlate to a drive that is going to have sub par access time, and extremely slow OS booting.
The odd thing is I've often seen very high seek and read error rates on drives with fairly low on time.

Does anybody have any other takes on evaluating smart data? I've used Crystal Disk Info, It seems to present...

what to do with faulty hard drives?
        by ChaosLegionnaire
i have several dead/bricked (not detected, doesnt show up or making constant clicks of death) and faulty bad sector hard drives. im moving house soon and need to get rid of some dead weight.

i thought of selling them for parts or not working but they are quite heavy and shipping each drive internationally via local post is US$23 each. im using some of the drives as gym strength training dumbells by putting 4 of them in a box to make a 3kg dumbell. but since im moving i cant carry the deadweight with me. any ideas what to do with them that is cost-effective for ppl like me...

        Hello guys,

As title says, does anyone have a clean bios for the motherboard in the title, from the sticker it should be the Athlon one.
I will attach my own bios if anyone can do a Clean on my bios, thanks ...
