    DIY variable power supply

I am looking to build a variable power supply with current limiting. I found a transformer 24v 150 VA, which can give me about 4 amps. I also found this website:

It is quite straightforward to build it, I just need a case for it and to make the PCB.

But I am mostly going to use it testing laptop motherboards, and then I started thinking about HP:s power supplys and that they have got a center pin for communication. Is this something i have to consider or will it work without it connected? Any information and experience on how this works is appreciated.
