    Watts vs. heat

Am I worried about nothing?Or do I have reasons to fear? Lets star by saying that in 2003, I purchased Antec Truepower 430 v2.0 12+@26. The reason that I bought it was my AG-520 refused to boot my rig at the time after adding a fan controler with LCD,and another hard drive. The Antec worked without a hitch. The load it was running was massive at the time.Colorful 600 series case,5 led 80mm fans and 1 80mm that wasent,1 120mm I took out of a Dell Poweredge 600,MSI 875P-Neo, P4 3.2E Pressy oc 3.4,Tt Volcano 7+,2gb KVR,Leadtec A400GT(6800GT)oc 420/1115 v mod 1.45 bios mod,2x80gb WD RAID 0,3x300gb Maxtor Diamond Max 16,one of them being sata,1x 200gb Maxtor Diamond Max Ultra 8 sata,1x Hitachi Deathstar 120gb
,no name fan controler wit lcd,lite-on combo,lite-on dvd burner, floppy,Sil RAID PATA controller,Sil sata RAID controller,SB Audigy 2,2xcold cathode tubes, while playing all the newest games at the max settings thst I could get my shit to go! It barley put out any heat, and I could Never hear it over all the other fans, but the Volcano was the loudest thing in there.Being the worry wart that I am,I went out and purchased the Neopower 480,thinking could kill that As soon as I got my prescious home,I hooked her up and started to game, everything was good for about an hour, then it would just shut down.It got plenty hot alright,so I stuck a 80mm fan on the rear of it,problem solved!Im still worried about the Trupower. It now resides in my file server, where the conditions might be better.Same motherboard, same pata and sata controllers, one burner,on board sound,eVGA 5700LE,5x80mm fans,3 are led,floppy,1gb KVR(2 sticks)4x300gb Maxtor DM 16,1 being sata,1xMaxtor DM U8 200gb,1xMaxtor DM16 500GB,1x Maxtor DM Slimline 8 30gb,XP Pro sp2.

now am I walking on a ice pond here?It runs 24/7.My daughter and son watch movies and listen to music with it from their own Pc's as do I and my wife, mabey Im just lucky, but that is one hell of a old PSU!

      Re: Watts vs. heat

Carrage returns are your friend. I will take some aspirin to get over that paragraph.

3 years is not an old PSU, unless it was really bad junk. Every OEM system out there (on average) runs several more years on their PSU, most systems do unless there's a system (cooling?) fault or PSU fault.

Having to add another fan could be a sign that your chassis cooling isn't good enough for the system thermal load, and might be improved by opening up chassis intake area or adding pusher intake fans in the front of the case. OR, you could just do what you did, put the fan directly on the PSU though it doesn't always take care of the other system parts' heat as well, tends to just divert more exhaust from the rear case fan to the PSU exhaust.

You do have a good rear case exhaust too?

Anyway, the load you described should run off a PSU with 26A, if that's an accurate rating.

If you can't stop worrying then open it up, blow off the dust and inspect it. If it then looks ok, no system problems anymore, use it as long as you can and so long as voltages are ok.
