    G5 Power on Issues

    Howdy gents

A friend asked for help with his IMAC G5 17" wich refuses to turn on anymore , after doing every now and then.

I asked him to open it and take the PSU to have a look , im attaching a picture of the interior with what i think are a couple of bulged ruptured caps and a brownish looking transformer , also he measured the output from it wich seems a bit low (20v instead of 24 , 2.60 instead of 5vdc) since hes overseas i wont be able to replace the caps but he could get a new psu from ebay.

I asked him to check the motherboard for any more deformed caps , he mentioned just one slighty bulged under the memory banks but the rest "looked" very fine.

Without doing much further testing would you guys think a replacement PSU would be enough?

Edit:Forgot to mention the PSU Part Number: 614-0365

Again thanks for any toughts/inputs on the matter.

Well, it might be enough but you can never be 100% sure.

He may get memory errors, programs crashing randomly and so on. The power supply definitely needs to be fixed or replaced.

      Thanks for the input mariushm

Ill have him order the PSU , hopefully it should give him a few month of light use until i can get over there and replace whatever caps in the mainboard that might give him problems.

Did you think a recap would help this psu? Im not so sure because of how that transformer looks.

The brownish stuff on the transformer looks to me like lacquer / varnish, which is perfectly normal.

The bulged / burst cap near that topmost black one is in the stand-by area, and is the most likely culprit for the dodgy 24vsb / 5vsb. A re-cap of the secondary should put everything back in order Just remember to also replace the small caps, "just in case". The big primary cap is fine as it is, and should stay that way during the rest of the PSU's lifetime

@Khron666: Man! Id never know what they keep using those small caps everywhere , you dont see the big fat ones failing much lol!

Ill have him hold on to the old psu then , so i can replace them too and keep it. Very rarely do i get mac psus on the shop.

Hi, trying to troubleshoot some problems with this laptop I just finished repairing which had power issues (Burnt Buck converter - SY8883DFC shorted to ground).

After repairing the above issue, I realized the following remaining problem,
Sound only comes from bottom speakers, top palmrest speakers don't work. Neither does the headphone jack (static/buzzing).
The computer recognizes headphones are connected and displays a popup in windows
Sometimes, the computer will boot up and the sound will be working fine. However, if I run intensive programs and the computer...

Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ACH - Ideapad 3 well known solder joint issues
              by Nagyesz
I have a Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ACH, which has started exhibiting the well-known issues of the Lenovo IdeaPad 3.

All stress tests run perfectly, and there are no performance issues. However, the solder joints are almost certainly starting to fail. If the top two screws on the back are not screwed in, moving the screen results in a BSOD or, in some cases, a slight artifact and freeze. This is a 2023 notebook..

How can I extend its lifespan? Could reflow help?

It has ryzen 5 5500h, rtx 2050, no soldered ram.

              Example of the artifacts:

Asus Rog strix g15 g513ih hn0865 and it's having display issues while running on igpu
              by Skgod
Hey I am having Asus Rog strix g15 g513ih hn0865 and it's having display issues while running on igpu. Works fine when I open any game or whatsapp windows application. The issues are :
              Black screen, freeze
The weird thing is that when as long as the laptop is running on igpu the problem keeps happening. But as soon as I open any game or whatsapp windows application, the laptop works completely fine.
When the screen freeze or black screen I used to move the display lid up and down and it usually works like that.
So can anyone tell me what would be the possible cause?...

got this tv from a friend who got a new one and didnt want to bother repairing this one.
he said it sometimes would just flash color patterns.
and sometimes it would just work
i figured it had some intermittent mainboard issue.
i stored it at home for a while before looking at it
when i plugged it in for the first time, i heard some popping noises
and then a big cloud of white smoke came out of the back of the tv!
i noticed the smoke didnt actually smell like anything. not like when an IC blows.
i unplugged it and took the back off and discovered...
