  • Re: Hardisk is making ticking sound

Jetadm123 advice is excellent , first thing you should do is stop using the faulty drive as your boot or system drive , get a second drive or a new one if you can afford it install the OS then connect the faulty one as secondary , get all your data out now , dont wait and see what might happen.

Once you do that it might be worth checking the Controller (pcb)from the suspicious drive for any visible damage.

  • Re: freezing hard drives

Howdy! ive had similar experience with Mad Professor and an indicative that cold might help you is that your drive is usable for a few seconds or minutes and then your data rate drops sharply or it just ceases to work at all.

In my case it were a couple of patients with failing MCU on the controller board and another with a dodgy VCM controller.

If you have a drive wich clicking sounds from the start wich isnt recognized by bios , i would not waste my time with the freezer trick since its most probably a HSA issue and it will require...

@Khron666: Man! Id never know what they keep using those small caps everywhere , you dont see the big fat ones failing much lol!

Ill have him hold on to the old psu then , so i can replace them too and keep it. Very rarely do i get mac psus on the shop.

  • Re: Recomended tip for SMD Working for Hakko FX-951 Soldering station

    Howdy retired!!

@video: bloody hell! that man is a machine , heart surgeon hand pulse lol.

Ill start looking for some 1.6mm chisel part numbers for hakko , Ive always heard to avoid those conical shaped tips , since the heat surface isnt big enough for any real soldering , guess theyre more than good in the proper hands .

  • Recomended tip for SMD Working for Hakko FX-951 Soldering station

    Hello Again

As stated , ive just got hold of a Hakko Fx-951 Soldering station , it looks quite like a toy my kid keeps asking about it , But im at loss at wich are the best tips for SMD soldering/desoldering.

I understand this station is compatible with the T-15 series , so if anybody has a recommended tip part number for this kind of work , It would be appreciated.

    Danke!!

    Thanks for the input mariushm

Ill have him order the PSU , hopefully it should give him a few month of light use until i can get over there and replace whatever caps in the mainboard that might give him problems.

Did you think a recap would help this psu? Im not so sure because of how that transformer looks.

  • G5 Power on Issues

    Howdy gents

A friend asked for help with his IMAC G5 17" wich refuses to turn on anymore , after doing every now and then.

I asked him to open it and take the PSU to have a look , im attaching a picture of the interior with what i think are a couple of bulged ruptured caps and a brownish looking transformer , also he measured the output from it wich seems a bit low (20v instead of 24 , 2.60 instead of 5vdc) since hes overseas i wont be able to replace the caps but he could get a new psu from ebay.

I asked him to check the motherboard for any more deformed...

  • Re: Understanding a laptop Schematic

    Hello budm.

Well no , no battery just the ac adapter and the plain Motherboard without any component besides a single ram module and its CPU.

But anyway , i took your suggestion about leaving the open fuse in place and just applied a little bit of solder to bridge the gap (just temp fix while the replacement arrives "5A 32V fast acting smd fuse") and of course it worked , but now I just got a black screen wich probably means a corrupted BIOS , I will check that later.

    Thanks for the suggestion...

  • Re: Understanding a laptop Schematic

    Hey budm

Well it definitly seems open (40 some Megaohm or just plain open on my autoscale meter) so its just as simple blown fuse as you mentioned, now to replace im looking at fast acting fuses right?

What kind of equipment should I use to replace this thing , I dont have any soldering equipment but have access to some of it (hot air station) at a friends place , so tips on how to do it are very welcome.

But again , if being the case of an open main fuse , how can i measure around 1.25v at one of...

  • Re: Understanding a laptop Schematic

Hello lucco , and sorry for my late answer i had no acces to the motherboard until today.

Theres nothing at those points you suggested , I even measured at all the close by coils (PL3 for 5VPCU and PL4 for 3vPCU) all are at 0v , so i started from the beggining and traced the 19v DCIN from the jack up to that "fuse" PF1 (Page 27) where im seeing VIN just on one side of it , nothing on the other , im assuming this one is open since theres no continuity either , or am i wrong trying to measure it mounted and treating it as...

  • Understanding a laptop Schematic

    Howdy guys..

I wanted to see if someone could help me interpret this schematic (aspire one zg5) im basically trying to troubleshoot a completely dead notebook (no lights whatsoever of any kind).

In my very limited knowledge , laptop mobos do have some always presen signals (5v/3v) wich ive been unable to find on these lappies , in page 2 of the schematic those are identified as 3VPCU/5VPCU , based on that and since i cant measure it in any place im trying to pinpoint the IC responsible for generating these signals.

Question #1: would be IC ISL88731...

Hello and sorry for the late update , buts been a crazy couple of months!!

I finally got an used 87-V off Amazon (on the mail atm from the US to where im in Venezuela) with an industrial probes set , carrying case and whatnot for some 250$ , as for my old 87 i managed to clean the contacts on the rotary switch with pure alcohol and didnt exhibit the issue for a couple days , then its back to misbehaving.

Once the new baby arrives i hope you guys can help me check its calibration , an issue retiredcaps just got me thinking...

  • BARCO Medical Display with weird issue

    Hello guys

Ive got this BARCO Display its a 20" Monochrome 2 MP display for Medical equipment , the issue is presenting is showing any image without problems except when there is pure black in them , then it show what should be black as a noise white.

The issue appeared after a power outage , ive inspected the logic board/power supply and all caps look ok.

Anybody have any clue about such a problem?!

    thanks!

  • Re: Fluke 87 going south?!

    Thanks for the links Retired

Whats described in the EEV blog from your link seems like exactly the problem with my unit , wich is the rotary switch wonder if thats servicable by a newbie.

Do you think the meter would lose calibration somehow if i were to try and clean those carbon contacts? and whats the safest product to use for such a task?.

    Thanks again

  • Re: Fluke 87 going south?!

    Hey Krankshaft

I did read about the kits for the lcd from ebay (some 28$) and if it only were that issue i would not have doubts about solving , but im not 100% sure if thats the problem , since with new batteries the screen works perfectly....if only for a few days before it indicates low batt again.

But even with a new batt I just switch to mDC measure for instance , it just start showing values out of nothing going up and down with no leads plugged , it also kind of turns on and shut off by itself for half a second if i...

  • Fluke 87 going south?!

    Hello All

Lately my old Fluke 87 have been behaving erratically , display fading, eating batteries in matter of days , measures going up/down constantly even without leads even connected and the like.

Since this is a very old meter , i was thinking wheter it was worth or not to have it repaired/serviced/calibrated , a call to a representative yielded a quote of about 100$ plus S/H.

So what would you guys suggest? a new tester? wich one would be better suited for light use in laptop/lcd troubleshouting wich i've started to get into recently?, or should i just...

  • Re: MacBook fan question

Having the fan run at full speed has a good side and a couple of downsides , it keeps your lappy cooler yes , but it also wears the fan quicker , makes it noiser and transform your machine in a mini vacuum cleaner , wich means it will draw more dust in and youll have to clean those airducts more regularly , so depending on your particular model and skills it could be more of a hassle than a solution.

  • Re: iMAC G5 17" iSight Boot issues

Fans look ok from the upside , would have to completely remove the board to check on caps and the full air duct system , but could a clogged fan produce such and error?

Btw I just have to just shut off and on the machine to get it to properly boot again , after being off for a while!
