    Enermax Galaxy DXX 850 EWL

Hi All, New member here; long time lurker, first time poster!

I've searched everything I could find related to Enermax here and am looking for a little guidance.

I run a Dual Quad Xeon with the Enermax EGX850EWL PSU. I couple of days ago it just died and the PSU power switch was still lit but no LED or indicator buzzer. I googled around and read anything I could find, then opted for the "let's open it up and see what we see" approach. (Disclaimer: The last time I seriously worked with components, Valves were still in fashion!)

Apart from a rabbit warren of dust bunnies I quickly found that the 20A fuse was blown. On visual inspection all of the caps look fine and there's none of that tan glue I've read about, at least, none that I can see.

I couldn't find a 20A fuse handy but did try a 10A which simply popped in an instant. I'll hit the store tomorrow and get the correct replacement fuse but in the meantime I'm wondering if there is a known fuse blowing issue with this PSU? It's run pretty well faultlessly for years.

(I did try the 10A with no load just to see if the indicator LED would light so that may have been a mistake on my part, I'll rig up a light bulb load tomorrow too.)

Any help or advice is very appreciated.

    Cheers, Gibbo

I personally would use a hard drive as load.
Please upload pictures using attachment function when ask for help on the repair

Well, since the fuse is popped something must be shorted, so its time to get the Multi-meter out to test some of the components in the primary (HV) side of the PSU

Might not work as most of these Galaxy's has a minimum load requirement of 50W and could turn off the power supply. Got a 850EWL myself and this has minimum load requirement.

Thanks for the answers so far. Yep, I understand that the 850EWL needs a minimum load and I'll be doing the component check today. What an adventure!

So... I pulled it apart and looked for anything obvious.

I have a bunch of frosty looking white staining which may be leakage but still don't know if that's it.
I've looked around for guidance but got kinda lost, can someone advise my where to start checking?
The 20A fuse blows on 2 attempts. Ideas?
            Thanks.

Please, post photos of the board.

Discharge the high voltage capacitors and then check the high voltage rectifiers and transistors for shorts?

Thanks. As much as I hate to appear to be the complete naif here, I know how to test a Bridge Rectifier when it's sitting on my bench but does the test still hold true if the rectifier is in situ ie. still in the circuit board?

This unit is one tightly packed board and I'm trying to fix it without completely disassembling. Is that a forlorn hope?

OK, I guess I should probably admit it, I'm a complete naif!

You should remove the bridge from the board to test it, and while your at it, remove the mosfets and test them too. Make sure to test the PFC diode and PFC mosfet too.
