    Re: FSP 5VSB Question

999999999, as an observer of this debate I can say that your explanations have been arbitrary so far while PCBONEZ has put some science behind his...

Also, I see no reason for your bigoted attack on religion and what role it has to play in this thread.

^ Nonsense. If you don't understand something I suppose it does seem arbitrary but to suggest that science implies lowering ESR increases heat is madness.

I'm not attacking religion but "something" has to account for such a backwards view when it is most certainly NOT science. I get it though, you were predisposed to believe whatever PCBONEZ wrote was correct and will defend that even in spite of a clear equation and quotes by experts.

        No, you're just being close-minded...

What do you think would be more wise of me as a not-so-technically inclined individual... I see one scientist offering a theory (albeit unpopular) but offering his reasoning behind his theory, and I have one who says "believe what I say because everyone else says it, and look, here's my proof of them saying it", who would I be inclined to believe?

The problem is that you underestimate the critical-thinking ability of human beings and expect them to believe what they're told. And, you have not succeeded in making a good argument for your point, which leads me to believe that you are wrong.

By the way, deeply RELIGIOUS Jews get awarded Nobel Prizes in Israel in the field of science... What do you have to say to that?

^ let's stick to science instead of drifting further off topic? I'm not interested in "what you believe" nor do facts depend on whether you accept them. Science does not depend on the beliefs of individuals. Earlier I posted a clear scenario, a reproducible test which anyone can do to establish on their own whether lower ESR increases self heating. Science requires this reproducibility. Take a switching power supply circuit, like the VRM section of a motherboard, and swap a cap with one same physical size but having half the ESR. Put enough of a load on it to cause temperature rise. Measure temperature before and after.

The cap with half the ESR stays cooler which supports what I wrote, not having twice the thermal rise over ambient temperature which would support what PCBONEZ wrote. Note that you can't just swap a single capacitor and leave the others unchanged in the same subsection of the circuit as you then have another variable involved with the mismatch in ESR among the sample group since the circuit I described typically places more than one capacitor in parallel electrically. You can remove that variable by simply using a different switching power supply like a wall wart, AC-DC power brick, etc. which has only one capacitor instead of multiple in parallel, though I mentioned a motherboard because it is easier to increase load on one using software to increase CPU utilization.

Science requires following a scientific method, not automatically supporting whatever a particular source has to say or write which is trust, not science. Do the test. The capacitor industry has for decades. [unsubscribed from topic, bye]

But this is not a VRM! This is the puny pi filter of the 5VSB circuit of a PSU which consists only of one filter input and output cap...

              BFG Tech BFGR550WGSPSU [LW6550SE Rev. K] – recapping & modding
              by momaka
Rather than post in the PSU build quality pictorial thread, again I am splitting off the recapping info into its own thread. Also, I plan on doing some possible modding/experimentation on this PSU, so I figured that info would also be better to go here.

The PSU in question is this one:

Detailed post with parts and build quality is here:
              https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showpo...postcount=3085

So this PSU has very simple output filtering: two 2200 uF caps on each major rail (3.3V, 5V, and 12V.)
Here is a cap diagram showing the caps...

KDM 480W PSU upgrade succes! (opinions?)
              by bauto601
Back in 2020 i bought a (2nd hand) compact ATX psu to replace my current one. My PC case only fits very short ATX power supplies so i didn't really have the choice of buying a decent 80Plus unit. The current unit is a modded YoungYear unit that i made a thread about a while ago:
A "nice" YoungYear unit? - Badcaps

The "new" unit is a KDM-M6480 480W psu, the 480W number is a typical KDM bullshit claim of course, but the 24A rating on the 12V rail seemed reasonable and the "Active PFC" claim gave me a bit of hope that this was going to be decent-ish....

Sparkle Power Int. LTD. FPS400-60GN (REV 1) – recapping (with cap list)
              by momaka
As mentioned in the build quality pictorial thread for this PSU, I got a Sparkle Power / SPI FPS400-60GN for recapping. The unit had only one failed cap: a Teapo SC 16V, 3300 uF on the 12V rail. All other output caps were okay. But since pretty much every cap in this PSU was a Teapo (and SC series for the output rails), and since the owner requested a full recap, that’s what I did.

Here is a full list of the electrolytic capacitors found in this PSU (minus the big input-side primaries):
              * 3.3V rail [capacitors C24 & C25]: 2x Teapo SC, 10V, 6800 uF, 12.5 x 40 mm ^^...

Capacitor Diarrhea - Nichicon PL Series
              by DrewPhillips
Hello All, I have on the bench a couple of PSU's which have some failed Nichicon PL series caps. They didn't "puke" their guts through the top, but instead "diarrhea'ed" corrosive brown electrolyte through the bottom, down the legs and onto the board. On one cap, the electrolyte rotted the cap right off the board leaving 2 little stubs, and also corroded a trace on the foil side.

The PSU's are Power-One MAP series and are ringing-choke topology. The semiconductors have date codes in 1993. The PSU's were used in a commercial application, fan-cooled. They had failed...

HannStar Hanns-G HC194d LCD monitor repair
              by momaka
Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...
