OK, it was off for five minutes whilst I installed a 160Gb formatted hard drive instead of the 80Gb that was fitted. I then powered back up and did a clean install of OS 10.4 Tiger.

So it was running okay with the original drive, yes?

Yes, but I decided on increasing drive size for future use.

Okay. Just wanted to confirm the drive swap did not cause the problem to be corrected.

I "think" it was a lack of heat sink compound on the Graphics chip - the one with all the caps around it and an insulating bit on the top, as per last two pictures.

I would guess the black staining on the chip ceramic was caused by the 'grease' in the Arctic Silver boiling out and running down by gravity. Whether any problems were caused by the dried out siilver 'dust' left behind I do not know.

I made sure that all old compound was removed before replacement. I also admit to a bias against using Arctic Silver because it contains metallic particles which, I feel, can cause problems at high clock speeds although I have no actual proof of this.
