    Mosfet test

i am testing a mosfet, i set my MM to diode i put the neg on the source, the pos to the gate and i get OL. I touch the pos to the drain and i get 0.056 while holding both leads to the source and drain i touch it and it goes high and then instantly OL.

Is this a working or faulty mosfet?

i am testing a mosfet, i set my MM to diode i put the neg on the source, the pos to the gate and i get 0.782. I touch the pos to the drain and i get 0.520 while holding both leads to the source and drain i touch it and it doesnt change.

i assume this means its most def faulty?

    thanks

    Re: Mosfet test

My understanding is you need to test these with an Analog Multimeter with a X10K setting. The analog needle deflects instead of what your getting with the Digital OL. I will try and find the testing procedure and get back to you if someone does not beat me to it.
Have you ever stopped to think and then forget to start thinking again?

As a very wise man once said on this forum: "Of all the things I have lost I miss my mind the most."

Let me recite to make sure I understand you correctly...
First you put negative probe on source and positive on drain.
Then you measure between source and drain with negative probe on source.
Finally, you touch Gate with your finger, thus discharging the MOSFET, and the resistance between source and drain goes infinite.

If so, the MOSFET should be good.

Yes you understand correctly. So this mosfet works. For the 2nd mosfet i tested that would be a bad mosfet?

          I am using this http://www.amazon.com/Sinometer-Manu...1200246&sr=1-2

but if i need an analog i will get it. I thought the diode setting would work for mosfets.

I made a big typo above... This:

            should be written like that:

Can you be more specific? Which part of the test did the 2nd MOSFET fail? Are you measuring this in curcuit or out of circuit?

What you have should be fine.

How do you test MOSFET in laptops ?
              by Jane
I tried to use this method:

              Testing an N-channel MOSFET:

Step 1: Discharge the Gate (turn off the MOSFET)
Place the black probe (COM) on the Source (S) and the red probe on the Drain (D). The multimeter should show no continuity (high resistance or "OL" – open line).
Then, touch the black probe to the Source (S) and the red probe to the Gate (G). This discharges any stored charge in the Gate, turning the MOSFET off.

Step 2: Charge the Gate (turn on the MOSFET)
Now, place the red probe on the Gate (G) and the black probe on the

Shorted drain to source on mosfet on Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05. Please help.
              by icanic
              Greetings!

I am trying to fix something and I have messed it up more.

I have shorted mosfet (QX6 from the picture) drain to source on the laptop and laptop now only powering on and off.

can someone help me identify what I burned? The mosfet is good.

Full schematic of the laptop is in the link.

              Thank you!

              Full schematic in attachment.

How To Test a P-channel Trench Mosfet Using A Multimeter In Diode Mode
              by dj8452000
I am new to electronics and I'm understanding most of what I'm reading but I have a mosfet on my board that I've identified as a P-channel Trench Mosfet. I haven't a clue how to test this and what I should expect to see with the multimeter probes. I am hoping someone with years more experience than myself can help me understand how to use a multimeter to read this. Please look at the drawing I have attached to this and can you try to explain to me what I should be doing with my multimeter in diode mode and what results I should expect from a good mosfet?...

              Test circuit for curiosity : 2 x NE555 (astable + PWM) + n-mosfet + var 10k + pc fan
              by bendeg
              Hi reader,

I'm trying to control a pc fan speed by giving PWM to the gate of a n-mosfet.

              1) generation of a clock with a 555 timer (~ 1,5 kHz, as seen in the datasheet, fig.12) (Vcc = 6V).
Output to TRIG of second timer (pin 2) + red led

              2) generation of a PWM with a second 555 timer (as seen in the datasheet, fig.18), CONT (pin 5) modulated by a variable 10k resistor (Vcc)

              3) Using output of second timer to "pulse" n-mosfet gate (MDP13N50) + yellow led

              4) pc fan (12V, 0.18A) in series in drain-source of...
