    simple question

    I have a simple question:

I have two laptops of same type Toshiba z30 , one without bios password the second with password. Can I use the programmer to copy from one bios to the other?

Does that also apply to all brands?

    Thanks in advance.

Q1: Can I use the programmer to copy from one bios to the other?
A1: You will be just copying the BIOS chip contents from computer #1 to #2, the password is stored in EC/KBC chip, so computer #2 will remain locked with bios of unlocked #1 laptop.

Q2: Does that also apply to all brands?
A2: It depends on bios manufacturer, the procedure may work for some models which store the password in bios chip.

      Re: simple question

      Thanks,

Are the passwords always stored in the EC/KBC chip?

Even the second and third generations of laptops?

        Re: simple question

In old Dell Latitude laptops the password is stored in EEPROM chip, then they increased the security and introduced MECxxxx ec/kbc chips where the password is now stored. In old Toshiba laptops that use Challenge/Response Code, the password is stored in EEPROM and in BIOS chip, but since bios has a checksum if you modify contents the laptop won't POST.
With UEFI, some passwords are stored in UEFI Variables in bios chip, sometimes in plain-text, XORed password or a hash of the password, other times also stored in EC/KBC chip.

I'll say that every model is unique, you can not categorize them into uProcessor generations, as from time to time a model will not fit in as to where the password is stored.

        Just my opinion.

          Thanks for your reply.

Is there a way or a tool to find out this information? Which bios to duplicate which ones not.

There's probably a way, by making a list.

              🛠️ MSI GP75 Leopard MS-17E71 – No Display, Deep BIOS/EC Troubleshooting
              by macabook
              Hello everyone,

I’m currently working on a dead MSI GP75 Leopard (MS-17E71) motherboard (i7 CPU, NVIDIA GPU) with a no display/no backlight issue initially. After extensive investigation, I’m at a critical stage involving EC firmware, BIOS/ME region interaction, and possible deep corruption. I'm seeking advanced insight from anyone with experience in EC/BIOS sync issues or PCH-level behavior. Here’s a full breakdown:
              🧩 Initial Issue
              • Board powers on (fans spin, keyboard lights up and can be adjusted, caps lock led lights), but no display or backlight
              • External display (HDMI) shows

Need to copy DMI info for HP ProBook 650 G2 Bios
              by Caimano
UPDATE of JANUARY 5th : I am cancelling this post because problem has been solved by creating a new bios starting from the old one with correct dmi and cleaning ME. everything works fine . thanks anyway

Hi, I am replacing a motherboard circus-6050A2723701-MB-A02 to an HP 650 G2 laptop because the original one was faulty. I bought and repaired a used MB which works fine now with its BIOS, but I wanted to copy the DMI data from the old to the new MB. I created with Flash Image Tool a new bios starting from the old original chip , cleaned ME region and new updated dump region extracted...

              ASUS TP500LA BIOS request/repair/merge?
              by jbonavita
Hi, my laptop wont boot at all
With original bios no POST, only LED lights
With alternative BIOS from model TP500LN (flashed via programmer) the notebook works again
              Some issues
              A- with bios from 500LN, it won't update from bios of model 500LA (from 500LN v203 to 500LA v300)
B- If updated from 500LN version 203 to 300, the battery stops being recognized

              Things I tried

1- Update / clear ME: Took the non working bios, made a backup, and did this: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/troubl...theory/trouble...

[REQUEST] Dell G3 3579 BIOS Password & AMI Protected Range/BIOS Guard Unlock
              by zenius
Hello, I have an old Dell G3 3579 (ST: 2WQ7LP2-8FC8) with a newer 8FC8 BIOS password. I have successfully attached to the flash chip (W25Q128JVSQ) on the motherboard with a CH341A programmer and made several modifications using Intel FIT (e.g., allow software SPI write) without bricking. I was also able to boot to a modified GRUB shell where I attempted to edit many BIOS security related options like BIOS Guard/Lock, Flash Signature Override, ME FW Image Re-Flash, etc.

Unfortunately, some of these modifications like to Intel BIOS Guard failed because it is fused into the PCH. Also,...
