Apple A1706 - Boots and shuts off

    Hey everyone,

Working on a macbook A1706, board number 820-00239-A.

When trying to turn it on you hear the chime, but get no image whatsoever, and after about 10-15 sec it'll turn off (monitoring usb amp meter, it goes back to 15v 0a. I'm using a 45W charger btw, can't find my 85W atm).

As far as I can tell all 3V3 an 5V lines come up, up until S0, and then go back to 0V. G3H stays stable at 13V.

Put it under the thermal cam, only L7030 gets a little hot (35c), but nothing out of the ordinary.

Where do I go from this? I'm honestly clueless :').

Edit: According to the client nothing happened to it. He left home with it working, and when trying to turn it on at work it wouldn't anymore. As far as I can tell there's no trace of liquid or other damage.

    1) A1706 is impacted by Flexgate:

    2) Test again with a 60W or higher adapter. Missing the initial splash logo could be Flexgate.

I came across the flexgate indeed, but since the laptop shuts down again I assumed this wasn't the issue. Is it normal that the laptop would shut down if it's flexgate?

try without lcd cable and use usb-c to hdmi. with that we can eliminate a possible flex or lcd problem.

With 65W adapter it stays on, so that's that.

Waiting for a usb-c to hdmi adapter atm. Thanx for the advice so far.

Nothing on an external screen using an usb-c to hdmi adapter. The Macbook is booting because you have sound and everything, but no image. As far as I can tell this macbook's flexgate issue in mainly backlight, but even with a strong light shining onto the display I have nothing. When look at the flex cables of the screen I can't really say there's any visible damage or cracks.

Flexgate also caused the display to not show unless the lid was at specific angles. The interface cables were not the proper length and break over time with the repeated opening/closing of the lid (normal use). Have had a mix of such models in the shop with the same fault. After some coaching to the clients, as it is their right on how to receive factory service, the customers were able to get the unit repaired by Apple at no cost to them.

Nevermind, I'm actually blind. It is flexgate, there is no backlight. And I've measured it to be 54V, so in theory should be fine. Strange it wouldn't show on an external display, but doesn't really matter.

And yes, but here in Belgium the free replacement on this fault only goes until 5y after the purchase date, and he's 5 months late.

Anyhow, thank you for the help/advice, and sorry for wasting everyone's time. Next time I'll check it better, first time I see one of these irl, now I know what it looks like.

It is fine. Still contact Apple and plead your case. If you are not satisfied with a resolution, ask for their supervisor. In the end, it is THEIR fault. They need to be responsible for what they selected as the BOM (bill of materials).

How is a customer who has paid top dollar (euro, etc.) supposed to know that the flex cable is too short??

I will be surprised if they do not perform this repair at no charge. Be confident and keep knocking on their doors till they handle this repair.

Hint: Think of your mother-in-law -> build up some anger and make that phone call / chat with them online for this repair request. Who cares that it is out of warranty? That is just a lame excuse to avoid responsibility.

I've sent the customer to Apple, included your mother in law advice haha. Thanx again!
