    Re: iPhone XS not charging

Can you use an iPhone X logic board to charge an iPhone XS battery?

According to this picture, yes. Same connector for a number of models:

      Very bottom battery connector.

Also, use google chrome to access Ben's website. It will then allow to auto-translate to English.

Yes, I also saw that and thought it did. However, it does not seem to want to charge the iPhone XS battery, it only displays as 1% on the screen. However, when I plugged the iPhone X battery back in, it charges like normal.

I have tried both iPhone XS batteries

Now that is interesting. Perhaps your XS battery is bad. Known to happen.

Is it the Apple original or 3rd party battery ?

If you leave out the (defective) battery on your XS - any different results when docking the lightning connector to your charger or host computer system ?

Since XS and X batteries share the same connector - does the X battery work on your phone ok ? Any chance your XS phone is able to charge the X battery?

            Re: iPhone XS not charging

So one battery is an Apple battery and the other is a third party.

If I remove the battery, the XS just turns off.

The X battery does work on the XS but it does not charge it.

I managed to charge the XS battery to 3% and the XS turned on find. I connected it to a MacBook and windows computer, however, nothing happened.

Do you think the best chip to replace first is the hydra or the charger IC

              Re: iPhone XS not charging

Hyrda first since the phone should have been detected through a known good Lightning cable when it is docked to the macbook or any other computer system.

There is no USB activity so seems to indicate a fault in the Hydra component.

While you are sourcing the Hydra chip, it should be possible to buy the charger IC from the same supplier at under $5 USD. Aliexpress has them all.

Hydra IC = CBTL1612A1 @ U6300 (as shown in the XS schematics).

              Charger IC = SN2600B0 @ U3300

                Re: iPhone XS not charging

Thank you for that information. So do you suggest that I replace both chips?

If the hydra chip is damaged, does that mean the charger IC chip also gets damaged?

Also do I have to buy a heating plate to separate the boards or can I use a heat gun?

I am trying to avoid buying internationally because our customs here is on backlog for 6 months.

I used the X battery in the XS and managed to find an iOS 15 beta 2 profile and updated my iPhone to it. However, my phone still did not charge.

                  Re: iPhone XS not charging

                  Hi.

                  1) No, the Hydra is a separate IC and function than the charger. It is very possible that the charger IC will work properly after the Hydra is replaced. Best to search around on the topic and youtube videos but given that USB does not work at all, I would start with the Hydra. Very sad to know that this happened after the IOS update. Concerns are that did the excessive heating cause some joints to come undone and raising this issue ?

You could try to reheat the Hydra IC area with low pressure but enough heat to reflow the solder joints.

                  2) From our knowledge - yes you need the jig made for this purpose and that is to properly desolder the many joints on the 2 PCBs. I think it is too risky to do this operation without it. Consider to contact Sunshine and/or Qianli in China. They are very well known firms in China and ask if they have stocking agents in S. Africa. Likely that they do.

                  3) Before proceeding, are you able to perhaps restore this phone to an older (working) version of the IOS? Perhaps that will help these issues.

It will suck if you truly are facing hardware issues but all due to this flaky IOS update. Given that it takes s/w to make or break the operation of the USB interconnect and the charging circuits, perhaps you are stuck all due to the latest IOS update ?

Personally we have not come across this case and even told my son to avoid the latest update for his iphone 12 till the dust settles.

Please check around and even chat with someone who is local or Ben in Germany for advice before moving forward. At the very least they can offer what they will do for the repair so we can all know that we are on the proper track.

Are you confident that your USB charging cable was replaced ok? That is of course another factor. The charger can remain non-working but the phone should have been detected by any host PC with a good lightning cable.

                    Re: iPhone XS not charging

                    Hi Mon2

                    1) Yes, I was thinking the same thing. I think when I separate the board and put it under the microscope, I will have to check every part.

Yes, I can try that because maybe with the heat one of the solder joints cracked.

                    2) I saw some guy selling it for $145 in my country but that is way out my budget.

                    3) Because I cannot connect my phone to a laptop and restore it using a IPSW, I have to use a profile to do it. The only this is that I cannot find any profiles for before iOS 14.6.

                    4) It really does suck, a simple update can break a very expensive phone. If you can find a profile for an iOS before 14.6 it will really help.

Yes, it is definitely best not to update any iPhone at the moment. When I was updating my phone to iOS 15 beta 2, it got extremely hot again.

Yes, the USB charger is fine. I have used many Apple and 3rd party ones. The funny thing is that when I plug my iPhone in, it starts up without me having to press any buttons. So it knows I plugged it in, it just doesn't charge.

Wait. If this occurs, then the usb is working as the phone turns on upon attaching to the adapter. Can you run iTunes and see if the phone is detected when mated to a computer?

Proper tools are a must to service these delicate designs. I recall another really good guy in Spain who has tons of youtube repair videos. Contact him to ask for a quote on this repair. He was the one who blew the whistle on Apple on the audio chip losing contact from too much heat and causing the boot loop issue. Let me see if I can find his details.

No it is not being picked up by either my MacBook or PC.

I see that a lot of people are having the same problem after the update. I do not know why Apple released it so quickly.

I tried the fix by TDarby719 but it did not work.

Yes, if you can try get the guy from Spain contact detail, it will really help.

Do you think I should wait for an update before attempting any repair?

Ok. Found him but he is in the UK. He is very talented and discovered the audio ic boot loop issue and fixed it.

Highly recommend to at least contact him or Ben for advice on this case.

I sent him a message and I am not waiting for a reply.

I also looked at Ben's website and it costs $360 to replace the Hydra. It is cheaper to purchase a new logic board. I can email him and see if he can offer any advise.

With the jig price it is cheaper and easier to buy a new logic board. If I did not need a jig, I would have just purchased the chip locally and replaced it for free.

If I can get the cheapest jig, it will make it a lot easier. The only problem with getting it internationally is that our customs are useless in SA.
