Re: HP probook 640 g2 - does it self destruct with bios chip removal?

I know its a couple years later, but I have a possible theory. The HP laptops that have socketed BIOS chips are internal engineering samples. I've gotten my hands on them twice on the used market. They have Rev. B bios instead of the standard Rev. F bios most of them have. That would account for why the 1st laptop didn't work, but not the second. So I'm not sure about that. But I can confirm that the internal prototypes they use in testing do in fact come with removal bios chips. The first one I found was a 8540W with a dreamcolor screen. It had no stickers, nothing on anything, the CPU was written on with a marker. Even the case seemed hand made. I scored it off eBay years ago. I just recently scored a 810 G2 it has some stickers, it's funny the warranty says 0 years and the serial number starts with ABC and is not in their system.

Like others, I too have noticed the dates on this thread but as I was just directed here via a Google search, I will add some info. I was just looking into the possibility of sniffing a Bitlocker key from the TPM chip on Probook 640 G5 and see the engineering samples being mentioned as a reason for removable BIOS chip. This laptop I am contemplating the Bitlocker recovery on actually has a removable BIOS chip. A coworker has had success in both these and the G2 in removing the password, so it should be possible for you.

Bricked HP Probook 450 G7 Bios questions
        by studdy05
Hp Probook 450 G7 s# SCD0348W35 had a locked BIOS. Bought BIOS and EC chips off Ebay that were supposed to match this machine - the 450 G7. Flashed in the BIOS on chip i bought using a CH341. BIOS unlocked next boot. Some error to contact HP. Entered BIOS and reset to system defaults and rebooted. Machine worked fine but every cold boot the contact HP message popped and everything else worked as fine. Assumed the error was from EC chip not matching BIOS that i just flashed in. So i flashed in the EC that was supposed to match from the EBay chip i bought and instant brick.

        Ive got...

Need (unlocked) bios for HP Probook 450 G3 Notebook
        by the_raz
I'm requesting a bios .bin for 2 of my hp Probook 450 G3's. Both of which I had forgotten the bios passwords. I stupidly flashed both of them with firmware "made" by the RCUnlocker software and I guess I shouldn't have. The last thing I did was flash both of them with RCUnlocker-fw thinking it would 100% work and left my programmer etc behind and won't have access to them for another 2 days so I figured I'd create a thread to see if I'd be so lucky that someone might have a working file laying around 😝

        ASUS TP500LA BIOS request/repair/merge?
        by jbonavita
Hi, my laptop wont boot at all
With original bios no POST, only LED lights
With alternative BIOS from model TP500LN (flashed via programmer) the notebook works again
        Some issues
        A- with bios from 500LN, it won't update from bios of model 500LA (from 500LN v203 to 500LA v300)
B- If updated from 500LN version 203 to 300, the battery stops being recognized

        Things I tried

1- Update / clear ME: Took the non working bios, made a backup, and did this: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/troubl...theory/trouble...

[REQUEST] Dell G3 3579 BIOS Password & AMI Protected Range/BIOS Guard Unlock
        by zenius
Hello, I have an old Dell G3 3579 (ST: 2WQ7LP2-8FC8) with a newer 8FC8 BIOS password. I have successfully attached to the flash chip (W25Q128JVSQ) on the motherboard with a CH341A programmer and made several modifications using Intel FIT (e.g., allow software SPI write) without bricking. I was also able to boot to a modified GRUB shell where I attempted to edit many BIOS security related options like BIOS Guard/Lock, Flash Signature Override, ME FW Image Re-Flash, etc.

Unfortunately, some of these modifications like to Intel BIOS Guard failed because it is fused into the PCH. Also,...
