reliable source for laptop batteries ?

yes i know buying genuine from the maker of the laptop one but very expensive .
firstly i thought i would rebuild the original one .took it apart and instead of 6 cells that it said it had i found 3 cells and 3 plastic tubes to fill the space of 3 cells .
thought ok will try 3 working cells . all looked good then one cell heated up like crazy so had to rip it out quick and throw outside to do its thing . another cell and looking good . plugged into laptop and no apparent charging according to charge light . checked battery and pretty hot . all i can guess is pcb in battery was no good .
so this leads me on to find a good new battery for reasonable price .

You don't mention the make or model of the laptop but there is usually a battery controller on the pcb that stop cells just being replaced.

You have to replace the cells with the exact same ones, same number, same capacity, same voltage rating. When replacing cells, you have to disconnect the ground wire before the other wires, and reconnect it after all the others.
If the battery wasn't charging at all and wouldn't let the computer run on battery at all (shutdown immediately when pulling AC power) then the BMS is in permanent failure and there is no point in replacing the cells as you would need to reset the BMS (which is often not possible as you usually need a secret key to do so, some secret keys did leak apparently though).
Also BMS in permanent failure is often linked to a blown fuse (sometimes the fuse doesn't blow but the wire to the cell does, thanks manufacturers for properly rating parts…) so that's another way to know.
Anyway I don't recommend messing with batteries so yeah better buy a new battery.
As for suppliers… I don't know, I've had good and bad experiences with eBay batteries, even coming from the same seller. They are most likely just resellers of China batteries even when they are local sellers. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. You cannot know until you test the battery, and even then you cannot predict its lifespan.

its a little asus eee seashell thing i got for free .. i see it as a good thing for my work . but not worth the price of a genuine battery pack as it might not charge anyway as that is unknown without correct battery .
am thinking this will be best by using an external battery pack .
i know good ones are expensive but will start a lorry if needed .
