HP Pavilion 15-P189na led backlight issue

    Hi!

My first post on the laptops forum. I'm usually a regular on the TVs section.

I've got this HP with a dark area on the screen as you can see in the pictures. It looks to me like it's LED edge-lit and some of the LEDs are not lighting up. A couple of times the dark triangle moved further up suggesting the next section of LEDs were going out too. At one point I was able to apply light pressure on the edge of the panel and the dark area would switch between what is shown on the pictures and the larger area. At the moment though it is just the smaller bit in the corner that is out.

It's easy enough and not too expensive to just replace the whole screen but I'm wondering if it might just be a connection problem. Or if the LEDs themselves are going bad, if it's easy enough to replace them as I might do on a TV. Just hoping you can save me a bit of time!

Thanks for any help you can give.

sometimes the flat of the led strip is damaged where it is folded on itself

Thanks. In the end I have ordered a replacement screen. I did take apart the old screen as I thought nothing to lose in trying. I think you're right that the flat cable supplying the leds was the problem as pushing on it did cause more leds to go in and out. However, the leds are quite well embedded in the metal frame of the panel and by the time I got it all apart to take out the strip it was looking like it would never go back together quite the same so I thought not worth the time.
