Re: Compaq Presario v6000 laptop repair (failed nVidia chipset)
Yeah, when I saw the audio work fine in Windows 7, that's exactly what crossed my mind. Perhaps with the laptop being a "Vista-gen" machine, I'm better off installing Windows 7 on it. (I even considered Windows Vista for a few moments, but.... nah. Vista takes a lot of cleaning and tweaking to get it working alright, and TBH, I haven't done that many Vista installs, so I might just pass on that.)
Thanks for the info.
Yeah, if I remember correctly from the hardware IDs, the audio was indeed some Connexant chip. I'll have a look again when I open the laptop to upgrade the CPU, though.
Been a while since I used Windows update (6 years, maybe?
). I hope it can just pickup the drivers only and not have to go through the entire process of updating everything - knowing Windows update, that would make the CPU stuck at 100% for a long time and could overheat my GPU. So if it does that, then Windows Update can go to hell. There's a reason the first ting I do on any Windows XP and Windows 7 install is disable the Automatic Updates service.
Then all of a sudden, the computer becomes responsive again.
Thanks agian. I'll give it a try when I get back to this laptop after the holidays. I hope it works too. It's not that I don't like Windows 7, but Windows XP just seems so much more snappy on that laptop. And it still looks better, IMO... but I know that is subjective. (For one thing, I still much prefer Windows XP's way of rendering fonts on LCDs and CRTs over Windows 7 and newer. I know in Windows 7 you can adjust ClearType, and I think I even successfully did it on one PC way back to make it look like XP... but all in all, I still prefer XP. Plus, there's no enforced driver signing in XP. Win7 is annoying when it comes to disabling that, especially 64-bit versions.)
