Hi guys
I've got a Galaxy J5 here with a blank screen
The phone powers up (I feel it vibrate) and it is recognised on USB as a Galaxy J5 but I don't see any folders or files. There is currently no sim in it so that may explain the lack of folders?
Anyway the screen is blank. I've tried some of these tricks I found on t'internet about holding various buttons together to get into service menu but the screen remains blank. While trying this it did make a sound once which sounded like I just took a photo.
On another occasion the phone booted, vibrated six times at a second or two interval then wasn't seen by the PC, whatever that means.
The owner told me the other day the alarm went off - so I guess the phone is actually working. She also told me it had some liquid seep into it (not actually placed in the liquid but along side it) but it's dry now
What I did find is some green gunky looking corrosion around the connector to the screen. I cleaned this off with alcohol. It looks like one or two pins on the screen side of the connector are just plain not there - unless ther are a couple blanking pins or something which should be missing. I have no experience of phone repair - first time for me.
The actual connector on the main board looks OK but a few of the solder joints between the connector and the board look dirty and blackened.
So I reckon I have found the fault (or at least one fault)
I've seen a few videos of how to replace the screen and they only seem to be about £15 to buy.
Does anyone with experience think it's worth buying a screen and is that likely to fix this? Is it possible to get the phone apart sufficiently so I can get meter probes in to test the continuity from the connector on the main board tracks to the pcb tracks and resolder if needed? I have needle probes but can't work on the connector down the little cover hole - and certainly can't resolder down it!
I have good soldering station, hot air etc and experience of SMD rework but nothing this small, 0402 is the smallest I've done.
I'm using bench magnifier and jewelers loop but I do have a microscope on the shopping list
Pic attached for what it is worth - was difficult to photo. You hopefully can see where the solder joint to the board looks blackened. I couldn't get a photo of the screen side connector but it is a bit nasty
Cheers
