    Sony Vaio - No Power

Hi guys, I'm working on a Sony laptop I just got given in the hopes of getting it going again. It uses the MBX-237 mainboard which seems to be well documented here for shorted capacitors and mine is no exception. I'm in the process of tracking down some replacements which should be easy enough but I'm a little worried about the power supply board (CNX-458) as one of the components on it looks as though it may have been a little warm. I can easily hook this board up to power separately and check it's output which I'm thinking is probably my next step. It has been powered since the damage was done and nothing is getting hot which is promising. Has anyone got a pinout for the outputs on this board or have an idea how to check the component at "W_PQ85".

    Cheers,
    Daniel

Well I got the mainboard running by replacing the capacitors that others have mentioned before so that's a good start. There's definitely something wrong with my power supply board though as it can see the battery is connected but won't charge or run off it (battery still has good voltage in it and PC happily runs of external power). I've attached a schematic of the board in question, the component I suspect is faulty (due to some dodgy looking solder and a slight discolouration of the board in that area) is labelled "W_PQ85". I don't really understand how to read a schematic but if anyone understands it please let me know if you think that component could be causing my symptoms.

      Cheers,

Re: Sony Vaio - No Power

Alright, just a quick update. I've ordered a few of these as they were the closest replacement I could find. http://au.rs-online.com/web/p/mosfet...stors/7965119/
Rated for a little less current, but I can't see the charge circuit needing more than 16A so I guess we'll see how it goes.
Any information someone might have on how to test this board would still be useful though, since I'd much rather do it externally than by trying to connect it to my freshly repaired mainboard.....
