    Asus X54H video problems

I've got in my service 2 of these laptops from 2 different owners. One of the flickers with a blueish/black background(some letters are visible as if it entered bios) the other with grey/black backgrounded as posted in the uploaded image.
Motherboard: K54LY Rev 2.0. with intel cpu.
I've opened one of them(blueish/black)) and did a reflow first on the ati chip but nothing changed so I tried a reball as well but the problem persists. I decoupled the lvds cable and tried on the external vga but same thing and changed ram too. The board has some onboard rams, could it be one of them is the culprit here?

I would guess dead GPU. Try replacing it.

I was thinking about bad video rams, any chance for that? I really dont want to order a new gpu cip and still have the same problem.

Bad VRAM does happen but it's extremely rare. I have one in just like that, with the same problem. It has been dropped. First i reflowed the Intel PCH as it did not display a picture at all nor did it attempt to boot. It booted but with this crap on screen just like yours.

Then i reflowed the ATI GPU. Same thing. I'm about to pull it out and see whether there are any broken traces. If the board is fine i will replace GPU.

Do you have a spare gpu around to finish the job? Let me know how it goes.

Pulled the chip and the board looks perfect. No, i did not have a compatible chip. It's on order. But it's $12 new - so besides the slow shipping from China, no reason not to try a replacement.

Ok, let me update you. Forgot, sorry.

Chip came in last week, replaced and... same issue. It seems that indeed there is a VRAM issue on these boards.

More so, today i put the old chip pulled from the ASUS K54LY main board on a HP mainboard that had its GPU burned due to some moron who reflowed it juuuust a bit too much. The original GPU that used to be on the Asus board showing garbage works great on the HP mainboard and displays everything fine.

Do you bake the BGAs for 24 hours before soldering them?
