14" MacBook LCDs - has Apple re-introduced a new serialisation type?

    Hi all,

Since about a month or two ago, we've observed a new type of 'serialisation' on the LCDs and we're just curious whether anyone has seen this
    • New LCDs straight from the factory (not programmed)- if the Mac is restarted or switched on from a cold boot, you must close the lid, then open it again (so two cycles of opening and closing the screen) in order to get display.
    • Transplant the IC onto another screen:
      • If the model and revision match exactly then it will perform as normal
      • If the manufacturer matches exactly BUT its a different revision, the colours are mostly inverted
        • We had 820-03556-01 and tried to fit 820-03556-A, and same issue as above, despite them both being LG.
      • If the manufacturer is different, the colours are mostly inverted
This makes repair almost impossible, as the solution is to fit pre-programmed screens from China. These 'pulls' are usually factory rejects that were fully programmed and failed QA, so sold on the cheap on AliBaba, Taobao, etc. But if you want to fit brand new fully working screens that won't fail in a few weeks time or have a high defect rate, you have to stock many, many variants in high quantity to keep up with every job you get in.

Can anyone shed light on this?

    Your observations are excellent!

Have you tried to make copies of the (display firmwares) using (Svod4)?
