Satellite P105 Strange temp problem

heres what I got. a P105-S6084. Originally a Core (1) duo T2300. I upgraded it to a C2D T7200 (7400's were EXPENSIVE)

one of its original problems were high temps (staying at 99). After taking the whole thing apart, I could see crappy paste. I used arctic silver in thin layers, even did the two, what looks like chokes next to the CPU that were cooled by the heatsink. did NOT like the two lytics very close to the cpu

so I put it back together and re-installed win7 32 to 64. Thought the problems were over but here it went again, back to 99c when installing updates. Strange, I thought, I'd try something else....

one thing I've done with this laptop is lay it on its side cause the power plug and heat output on on the back. I laid it on its other side. Temps started to go down to acceptable levels. WTF???? I know that heatsink is screwed on tight and all the screws are in. WHY would it be doing this???

do you use graphite oil on cooler when you finish cleaning?
maybe a cold/cracked solder on some pins?

update: when its on its right side, and temps start to slowly climb (after 5-10 mins). The fan kicks in HIGH, but blows only warm air. I put it keyboard up, suddenly the air turns hot, the fan kicks silent and the temp lowers to acceptable levels

edit: did I mention even at 99C, it was still running, no video problems/lockups, though it was running slower cause the cpu temp throttle

could it be a failure in the heatsink itself? coolant gas leakpossibly

but if it all leaked out, why do temps return to normal when its right side up/left side up?

maybe the heat is rising up the copper to the grill when on one side and is trapped at source when on the reverse side, if you follow my meaning, just a thought

It's a toshita, that's why...

A friend's Core i7 Toshiba is running at 99 degrees constantly, very disturbing, even when blown out and well ventilated, and it's less than 2 years old...

I'd agree with the guy above that suggested a heatsink failure.

strange, I have ANOTHER Toshiba showing the same signs, but this is a turion (RM-72). I took the whole thing apart, cleared out all the dust (and there was a lot). Cleaned up the crap paste and put a nice thin layer of AS5 on the chip. It plugs into the right side, air out the left, so I put it on its back. Was installing windows, it turned off. Air was pushing out fast,and cool. I put it right side up, suddenly, the air turns hot, the fan slows down and it starts cooling normally. Is this a toshiba thing?

How is the heatsink clamped to the CPU? Can something go wrong there?

maybe the screw holder for the pipe that is soldered to the board its fubar!

check them all 4

they all looked fine. They're spring holders. I wonder if that is why, I wonder if this was a toshiba thing for a certain period of time.

it still would not explain why the first laptop worked fine on its right side but not left, I guess unless the majority of the weight was top heavy on the right side. It also used spring holders, but still the springs were tight

I wonder if its a early symptom of coolant loss. Its going to be difficult to decide for certain. I would try testing the heatpipe at different orientations using hot air or hot water.

I agree, probably the heatpipe.

I had this on another CPU, though - I got frustrated, and lapped the CPU (obviously not possible here), and blew the dust out of the mobo socket. It worked fine after that.

Difference with that one was that it wasn't actually reaching 120*c, it just claimed it was - powering it off and pulling the heatsink straight away revealed it was cold to the touch.

Is it definitely getting that hot and not just sensor error?

but it works so well on ether side and right side up. Infact the temps are perfect when its oriented like this
