    Toshiba Satellite Pro No Power

My son was at his friends house with his laptop and his left click got stuck and wouldn't click so his friends dad had the brilliant idea to stick a screwdriver in and try pop it out.

So as he done that the laptop turns off instantly and now no longer charges or turns on with no leds anywhere.

So stripped it down and can see where he has scraped the board and remove a resistor and blew out a stepdown converter.

Thinking this is completely done for?

As my understanding of the stepdown converter would downscale the needed amps or voltage and now without it with a charger being plugged in numerous times and trying to turn it on could of well blew out other components?

heres the picture of it anyway

You need to order replacement ic and add the removed component. After that you will know. Also need to have hot air station to change the ic. To know which component was removed, give the exact model of the laptop and mainboard name and model if possible.

It is better to remove the TPS51124, solder the missing capacitor (from what I understand from the photo and its datasheet), check for shorts on the two output lines, the VIN line and the 5VA line, check if upper and lower fets of both lines are O.K. and then solder the TPS51124 and power up laptop.

Re: Toshiba Satellite Pro No Power

How on earth does someone even manage that through the TP plastics?

But yeah as the others aid, replace TPS51124 and the missing capacitor. If it doesn't work after that consider scrapping it. It's hard to give a better answer without knowing the model number.

Be warned it probably still won't work after doing the above. In my experiences with DC stepdown-related damage, there's always some other component somewhere that's near impossible to track down causing problems. On a HP 6735s I worked on that component actually turned out to be on the opposite side of the board.

Re: Toshiba Satellite Pro No Power

sorry i don't have the motherboard model as i'd decided the IC was out of my depth to remove with no rework station

and the likes of RS Components wanting £4 for the IC then near £7 handling and packing for a IC smaller than a cheerio, joke of a company.

              laptop model is L450D-12X

thanks for the responses, even if I could replace the IC i'm guessing other components could be dead and it'll be never ending fault finding etc, luckily I guess this has visual damage

              @spleenharvester

The guy after the fact is now denying all knowledge of doing this and claiming the laptop was already off when he'd tried to move the left click back, which is utter rubbish, the scrape mark can clearly be seen on the picture and from my experience marks like that and components becoming missing doesn't happen on it's own

It's possible it was indeed switched off but that the battery or AC was still plugged in, hence causing the short.

Best thing to do is look for a spare on any other scrap boards you have lying around. I've replaced QFN chips like those several times with a hot air gun, and almost no experience.

tbh i'm not going to attempt it no doubt i'll still get £50-60 after fees on ebay for it as the battery still held just over a hours charge and the screen is still fine.

my son told me what happened he stuck the knife/screwdriver in and the laptop just turned off so anything after doesn't really matter I suppose

                  thanks for your input

Can't blame you really, not worth the effort for an old, low-end AMD based laptop in my opinion. Usually if it's older than rPGA988 socket and the problem isn't an easy fix I just chuck it in the scrap.

that TPS51124 is SYSTEM POWER +V1.8S
so i`m 40% he is not the only one broken
Just cook it! It's already broken.
