    HP 6715s - faulty transistor identified

    Hey all.

    Scored a HP 6715s untested base with battery for £6! No reason, just wanted something to play around with haha.

    Disassembled it and there appeared to be minor water damage around the DC jack, some kind of solidified sticky residue around there.

    I've done some multimeter testing and identified a faulty transistor right next to the DC jack - Q75, an SSM3K7002F. It only reads on one leg, and infinity on the other - identical surrounding transistors read fine on both.

    ^On that diagram, the faulty leg on Q75 is #3, the one connecting to R75, Q13 etc.

    Here is a photo of the board in question (blue depicts where the residue was, circled in red is Q75):



    The laptop, as it stands, is completely dead - no lights whatsoever, on DC or battery (though the battery may just be discharged, I am not sure). I accidentally shorted something with the multi and the power light/charge lights kicked in very briefly and died again.

    1) Would Q75 being faulty cause these symptoms?

    2) What can I replace it with? I cannot seem to source it though I do have plenty of scrap motherboards with transistors available.

    3) Would I be able to short across the faulty leg briefly to see if it comes to life?

    Further investigation has found C43 - which is connected to Q75 - is dead shorted, as well as some tiny tiny components that don't even show up on the schematic (anyone know what these are?).

      Schottky Diode D13 also appears to be faulty - SSM14-1A40V.

      EDIT: Nvm turns out it's fine

        Just shorted across the bad leg and the board started booting instantly!! Also managed to source a replacement http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3904606788...84.m1423.l2649 for anyone after the same part, it doesn't show up on ebay search for some reason, it was a pig to source!

          Cannot believe this... replaced Q75 with a new one and the second leg is blown, again! And again, it boots fine into Windows with the leg shorted across

            Got this speaker from a friend , defective. Power led comes on and off , in a loop.
            Disassembled, got the board out, and after a bit of measuring I found a low resistance on a 5v6 line. With a bit of current I found a transistor heating up on that line (labeled T1 and 113 as on pic).
            After removing this guy, I got a value of 0.7 in diode mode on that 5v6 line, which before had 0.02 or something like that.

            I tested powering it up without the IC, and the speaker turns on and stays on, and works fine

            Still, I need to replace this transistor....

            Hello esteemed members. I appreciate that my question will strike some as being somewhat childishly simple, but it genuine perplexes me! I have repaired several laptops before by removing a faulty capacitor that was short-circuiting the motherboard, whereupon the laptop would then work. For me, it begs the question that, if the current can bypass where the capcitor was when it has been removed, why didn't it just bypass it when it was present and faulty,? I can't get my head round the premise that if the other side of the capacitor is connected to ground, then why doesn't the current simply bypass...

            Hello everyone,

            I guess I need help from the masters to try and find what is frying a 2SC5669 transistor on the left channel of this front center Amp for a NAD T752.

            Was working perfectly and all of a sudden I heard a pop, and then a glow from the amp. Not only did the 2SC5669 burn a leg, but R520 which is a 220 ohm resistor partially burned - it now measures 110 ohms.

            I bought this amp second hand fairly cheap as it was not working, it went into protection mode. I finally traced it down to the same transistor Q510, the one that just popped. It was shorted...
